Garrett gives new meaning to term ‘Bottom Feeder.’ Callers attribute push-poll to incumbent


“You’d think my opponent would realize how important this election is. You’d think he’d want to talk about what really matters to people in the 5th Congressional District. Rather than having debates throughout the district, he’ll do whatever it takes to try and win, even to the extent that he’d stoop to having supposed pollsters spread disinformation about me,” said Anne Wolfe, who is running against Scott Garrett to represent the 5th District in Congress. “Instead of talking about the environment, suburban sprawl, education, the expiration of the assault weapons ban, women’s health, unfunded federal mandates, how he feels about stem cell research and a host of other important issues, the only thing he seems to expend energy on is dredging up untruths, half-truths and insinuations.”


Wolfe was referring to a push-poll conducted by Garrett’s campaign, Sunday night, September 19th. A push-poll is a campaign tactic meant to spread disinformation about a candidate or issue and plant it in the minds of those being ‘surveyed.’ It purports to be legitimate opinion polling. Push-polls are designed to shape rather than measure public opinion. Wolfe’s staff fielded dozens of calls at campaign headquarters this morning from concerned citizens who had received phone calls from an alleged public opinion pollster.


“At first I thought it was a legitimate poll,” said Demarest resident, Jean Strickholm. Strickholm is a retired school teacher and currently manager of the All Seasons Chamber Players. “The young lady didn’t identify herself clearly but I thought it was important to give my opinion,” added Strickholm. “But when she started saying suggestive and negative things about Anne Wolfe I began to have serious doubts. I asked her that since she was talking negative, did she want to ask me what negative thoughts I had about Scott Garrett. She changed the subject.”
