TRENTON - According to a poll released yesterday, President Bush and John Kerry remain in a virtual dead heat in New Jersey, a state critical to the Democratic challenger's presidential hopes.
Kerry led Bush, 49 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters in the Quinnipiac University poll, but the margin of error was about 3 percentage points in either direction. Independent candidate Ralph Nader got 2 percent of support from likely voters.

Among registered voters, Kerry leads Bush 44-42 percent, with a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The poll was taken from Oct. 1-4, with 1,184 registered voters. Among that total, 819 said they were likely to vote.
The latest poll was taken after the first presidential debate, but before Tuesday night's debate between the two vice presidential candidates.
Seventy-six percent of those polled said they watched the presidential debate, and 50 percent of them said they have a more favorable opinion of Kerry after the debate, while only 7 percent said the debate caused them to have a more favorable opinion of Bush.

"While Kerry got a bump from the debate, New Jersey is still a squeaker and it's because of terrorism, a concern that favors President Bush," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
When voters were asked about who would do a better job on terrorism, Bush got 52 percent to Kerry's 38 percent.
