Anne Wolfe for Congress in the 5th
Monday, October 25, 2004
In the 5th Congressional District voters, are choosing between one-term Republican incumbent Scott Garrett and Democratic challenger Anne Wolfe. In 2002, Garrett replaced retiring moderate Republican Marge Roukema. While the district is historically Republican, Roukema was never viewed as a rigid conservative. There is no question where Garrett stands; he is a proud conservative.
That is both a strength and weakness. Garrett is a highly principled politician who believes in smaller government. At times, that has put him at odds with the Bush administration. He differs with Bush on the need to import cheaper drugs from Canada and to allow Medicare to bulk purchase prescription drugs. He sees this as a way to lower health costs. He also bucked his party leadership by voting against the president's prescription drug bill.
However, he remains a firm believer in the president's tax cuts. Garrett sees the tax cuts - including corporate tax cuts - as a method of encouraging new investment back into the economy. The problem with that theory is that it is dependent on a fast growing economy and a cutback in federal spending. Neither has happened under Bush.
And while Garrett, who recently visited Iraq, does not see the Iraq war as going as smoothly as it could have, he supports the president's overthrow of Saddam Hussein and believes that history will prove Bush made the correct choice in launching a pre-emptive war.
Wolfe differs with Garrett on tax cuts. She describes a "trickle-down deficit;" tax cuts - even those targeted toward the middle class - end up costing taxpayers in the end.
