Bergen Record Endorses Wolfe!
Edited on Fri Oct-29-04 09:52 AM by Tandalayo_Scheisskop
Updated! With content and link!

WHEN New Jerseyans vote Republican, they generally pick moderates. The 5th District sent a moderate Republican to Congress for more than two decades, but it is represented now by one of the most conservative lawmakers in Washington, Scott Garrett.

Mr. Garrett, who is seeking his second term in the House, calls himself a "mainstream tax-cutter," but his voting record contradicts that claim.

His opponent, Democrat Anne Wolfe, has positions more in line with moderates in both parties, and she has experience in both the public and private sectors. She would better represent the district.

(snip)

In meeting with voters during the campaign, Ms. Wolfe said some have asked her "Where's Marge?" - a reference to Marge Roukema, the Republican moderate who represented the district for 22 years before retiring. These residents of Bergen County, which has the largest number of voters in the district, were unaware that Mr. Garrett is now their representative.

Whom would they support if they knew the stark differences between the two candidates? Ms. Wolfe, a social moderate and fiscal conservative, or Mr. Garrett, the rigid conservative?

We believe they would support Ms. Wolfe, and that she is the better choice.

Please, now would be a GREAT time to go to Anne's site and give her a little taste. Help this woefully underfunded campaign get over the top. Anne CAN win! Give her the tools!

1. nice!
The Bergen County paper supporting Wolfe - that should be good. I hope we can pull this one off. But I just have a feeling that most people don't even know who she is. I think I've seen only one TV ad for her and several for Garrett. But we're still gonna vote for her in our family.

2. Met her recently at the Oradell train station, hope she can do it
That is my district and I hate being represented by a wingnut. The most interesting part of the Record endorsement was its comment that many voters were asking her, "Where's Marge?", not even realizing that moderate Repub Marge Roukema had been replaced by the wingnut Garrett. What a shame that people pay no attention.

3. Garrett's extremism exposed
Dear Editor:

In your endorsement of Anne Wolfe, you barely scratch the surface of Rep. Scott Garrett's extremism ("Wolfe in District 5," Editorial, Oct. 29).

In the 2000 and 2002 elections, Garrett received money from a group called Gun Owners of America. This group was created as a less-compromising alternative to the National Rifle Association. It believes that the solution to school violence is more guns in schools.

The group's founder is militia activist Larry Pratt. Pratt was forced to resign from Pat Buchanan's 1996 presidential campaign because of his ties to neo-Nazis, white nationalists, white supremacists and the violent fringes of the anti-abortion movement.

This group is careful to endorse candidates it believes will promote its radical agenda and will give the group access to the halls of power. Garrett is in unfortunate company.

4. like we didn't see this coming
The Record has a somewhat liberal slant (very slight) and is therefore my favorite newspaper...other than the NJIT student newspaper, which I'm the editor of
