Republicans give $125K to hold seat and White House

Hill Republicans are lining up behind Rep. Heather Wilson (N.M.) in her quest for a fifth term, with the dual purpose of keeping the congressional seat and helping reelect President Bush in a state that figures to be one of the 2004 battlegrounds.


House Republicans contributed more than $125,000 to Wilson’s re-election campaign before the March 31 filing deadline, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. They hope to boost voter turnout in a district that President Bush lost by 2,802 votes in 2000 while Wilson was winning it by more than 18,000 votes.

“You want to make sure she wins, but if you turn out another 500 people, it could really make a difference,” said John Feehery, Speaker J. Dennis Hastert’s (R-Ill.) press secretary. Hastert contributed $10,000 to Wilson’s campaign.

New Mexico’s 1st District, which includes Albuquerque, is being targeted by both parties. Because of that, money spent on the congressional race can affect the outcome of the presidential race, or vice versa.

Is this so? If we can turn a race like this one, it definitely heralds a Democratic majority in the house. I would love to see Delay and Co. relegated to the minority.

2. We must get Heather Out of Office

This is an important election in New Mexico, and one that will set the stage for New Mexico's future Representation in the U.S. Congress. Pete Domenici plans on having Heather Wilson take his place in the Senate once he retires. (the terror, the horror). We need to get her out of her seat in the House of Representatives long before she runs for Pete's seat.


I supported Miles prior to the state primary, but now I'm working for Romero. The more I find out about Richard Romero, the more I like him. I have been helping out at his headquarters on Rio Grande Blvd. because I know how importance it is to get him elected. Heather is a Bush Rubber Stamper. My vote against Bush may not count for much, but I'm working to make sure he doesn't have another sheep in Congress.

7. CG, we've also got to get folks to check their voter registrations

The election commission is saying HUNDREDS of voter's registration cards have been returned (and many have been fraudulent). We CANNOT take a chance!

4. I think New Mexico's one of our least talked about and best shots in 2004

Both NM-1 and NM-2 are moderate enough districts to swing either way. The Democrats have a powerful ally in Gov. Bill Richardson and he will be able to help out both Richard Romero in NM-1 and Gary King in NM-2. Rep. Wilson is already pandering for votes and NM-1 actually looks a lot closer in polls at this point than it did last year. Gary King has much name recognition from his father, the former governor and could oust Rep. Steve Pearce (who hasn't built up much name id here). I agree with an earlier poster that eliminating these two from the House would virtually insure that a Democrat picks up Sen. Domenici's seat (though, to be honest, I think that Gov. Richardson will run for it and he's so popular he'd easily win).
