At the stroke of midnight, 12:00 a.m. July 24 2011, Linda Mussmann and Claudia Bruce, partners for 35 years, became — perhaps — the first same sex couple to be officially married in the state of New York.
At the exact moment that the state’s Marriage Equality Act became law, Mussmann and Bruce signed a marriage certificate before Hudson City Clerk Tracy Delaney while Mayor Richard Scalera pronounced the couple legally wed.
The moment was quickly followed by the cheers and applause of the large crowd of family, friends, officials and some strangers gathered in the back hall of the Time and Space Limited Warehouse art and community center on Columbia Street, which Bruce and Mussmann created and have co-directed in Hudson since 1991.
