What is Brooklyn?
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 09:58 AM by Jesus Saves
Where in NYC is it? Who lives there? Is it a cool place?

Is it big?

2. Brooklyn is not so much a place
as a state of mind. It's incredibly diverse, but all Brooklyn denizens have a tremendous sense of place (their particular neighborhood culture) and loyalty to it. See "Saturday Night Fever" - great Brooklyn time/place piece to give you an inkling of it.

3. It is the Bronx' younger, and less important sibling.
But, yes, it is big and extremely diverse. Utterly Democratic in its politics. ( The last is not ALWAYS a good thing.)

5. Brooklyn is where everyone on Long Island was born
Except me. I was born in Manhattan. Not too many of us out here in the drive-by towns in Suffolk, though. Brooklyn is geographically part of Long Island, as is Queens, but it would never think of itself that way. It's its own place and used to be a city in its own right. It has its own accent. It has Coney Island. It will always have the Brooklyn Dogers no matter where the team calls home. It has the best view of Mahattan anywhere, especially at night. It has Barge Music. For a few decades it was a place to try to get out of, but now it may just be the coolest spot on the planet.

7. Brooklyn is one of the 5 counties that make NYC.
It has the largest population of the five
counties...approx 2 1/2 million ethnically
diverse people. Before 1899 it was its own
city. Brooklyn is a mix of residential areas
and commercial areas.

Nassau Ave. Just lived there until I was maybe 3 and then went often to visit my grandparents, aunts and uncles.
