*Attorney General Eliot Spitzer would convincingly defeat Governor George E. Pataki if the election were held today, a new Zogby New York poll reveals, with the Democratic attorney general leading the incumbent Republican by 18 points. The same survey finds just one-in-five (19%) New York voters think Pataki deserves a fourth term, and only three-in-ten (29%) think the Empire State is on the right track. The telephone survey of 705 likely voters was conducted from March 17 to 19, 2005, and has a margin of error of +/-3.8 percentage points.
The Pataki-Spitzer match-up shows the governor trailing in every region of the state, including the Upstate, where he trails 46% to 32%, and the suburbs, where Spitzer leads him 40% to 38%. The three-term governor trails with nearly every group statewide, though he does slightly outpoll Spitzer among those earning more than $75,000 a year (Pataki 43%, Spitzer 42%). And while Pataki captures a majority of Republican votes, Spitzer is cutting into his base, with 23% of Republicans saying they’ll vote for the two-term attorney general.
