K-Rock in NY changed formats
K-rock in NY has changed formats to add a lot more classic rock. They aren't playing almost any new music. It is so frustrating. They were the only station in NYC area doing "modern rock" or "new rock." There is no alternative to this in NY. I am so disappointed.

Why K-Rock Flipped
April 04, 2005
By Paul Heine

Infinity programming prez Rob Barnett and WXRK New York OM Robert Cross explain the radical transformation at Howard Stern’s flagship station

Why did Infinity radically alter the format at WXRK (K-Rock) New York, relegating pure modern rock to a new Internet-only product and launching a new, wide-screen rock hybrid on the air?

“A big part of this decision was based on opening the aperture of the radio station,” Infinity president of programming Rob Barnett tells BillboardRadioMonitor.com. K-Rock, which is losing morning man Howard Stern to satellite radio at the end of the year, is now targeting “a little bit older and wider” audience, Barnett says.

To draw attention to its retooled sound, the station has given its airstaff (outside of Stern) a week off. They’re expected to return on Monday. “We don’t have any intention of going jockless,” Barnett adds.

1. What's going on?
I read last week that Philadelphia lost its only rock station - the article cited increases in Latino population and more (white) kids listening to rap/hip-hop. Here in lower Alabama we have a great locally owned adult rock station, several top 40 type stations and a couple of hard rock stations along with oldies and country formats. Been the same for several years now. Why no rock in the big eastern cities?

Y100 is a great station and they were changed to urban. A DC station was also changed to "latin"

8. Philadelphia still has many rock stations
Y100 was our only pure Alternative Rock station (which is more of a modern style rock). We still have 94.1 (sister station to K-Rock and our Stern station), 93.3 and 102.9 (only one of the 3 that is all classic rock)

2. isn't that returning it to what it started as?
as i recall, k-rock's original programing was more geared toward classic rock - or what is now known as classic rock - and not modern stuff.

what about wlir? hasn't it taken on the role of the modern rock station? or have they gone too pop from what you're seeking?

4. K-Rock started as classic rock.
But that market is saturated now with a few stations, the biggest being Q104.3.

WLIR/WDRE switched to hispanic sometime last year. It's a real fucking disappointment.

5. didn't hear about WLIR
I listen sometimes online (when not in NYC) but thought they were still broadcasting at 107.1 - that changed?

6. I found a website that says they are there.
They used to be on 92.7. I'll check it when I get home.

Bleachers, maybe this is the answer to your plea.

11. Think you have it bad?
Okay, I listen to oldies mainly, but I listen to classic rock as well (I'm into '70s). I am from South Jersey, living in Central Florida (a Blue County, thank God), going to school here for at least another year. Well, I'm on my way to school one day a few months ago when the oldies station 100 on FM (from Orlando)played "Changes" by David Bowie. I thought, "Gee, this is a different song for them to play." The next thing I know it sounds like Telemundo. Talk about a bad day. I miss WMMR, WOGL (and I thought it was the end of the world in 1987 when WCAU-FM, my absolute favorite went oldies), Y-100 (I'm really bummed about that-remember the billboard that used to tell what song they were playing on I-95 in Philadelphia), even NJ 101.5 on the weekends. Think about driving 75 miles in silence when you get bored of the CD you are listening to. If you ever move to Florida, make sure that you have a good CD collection or get satellite radio.

12. I'm sick of classic rock, too young for LITE FM and too white for rap
There is nothing to listen to on the radio it makes me crazy. I just don't want to hear another set of "Hotel California, Money, Won't Get Fooled Again and Sweet Home Alabama" It's enough already.

Rap gives me a headache, and it's too misogynist for me. SO what is a 45 year old white woman who is not ready to die and not so entrenched that she won't listen to ANYTHING new do??????
