White House confirms: Bush is coming

(May 20, 2005) — The White House has confirmed that President George Bush will be coming here Tuesday to discuss changes he wants to make in Social Security.
“The president will travel to the Rochester area May 24 to participate in a conversation on strengthening Social Security,” said White House spokesman Ken Lisaius.
No further details about the visit were available from the White House.
Meanwhile, Greece officials are preparing for the stop from Bush at Greece Athena High School, where he is expected to talk about his Social Security plan.
This year, Bush has traveled to about 25 states to push his controversial plan to overhaul Social Security. According to sources, this would be his first stop in New York state on the topic. In most visits, Bush has held town hall-style meetings.
Social Security has been Bush’s top domestic issue during his second term He wants to allow future retirees to divert some of their payroll taxes into personal retirement accounts.
U.S. Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Clarence, Erie County, is helping the White House coordinate the event.
Greece police are already planning security detail. Greece Police Chief Merritt Rahn and members of the U.S. Secret Service walked through the school yesterday.
Rahn said the president’s security would be a coordinated effort among the Secret Service, the FBI, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Greece Police and possibly Rochester police officers.
Federal and local officials also have met to discuss security at the Greater Rochester International Airport.
