Over 1,700 sickened at N.Y. water park (Seneca Lake Park’s Sprayground)

Gastrointestinal illness possibly stemming from a state-run water playground in the Seneca Lake State Park has sickened more than 1,700 people, mostly children and teenagers, the New York Health Department said Friday.

Seneca Lake Park’s Sprayground, which has water jets shooting up from a hardtop surface, was closed after tests showed the tank system that feeds the water jets was contaminated with a common waterborne disease called cryptosporidiosis.

The agency reports that 1,738 cases of illness have been reported in 20 counties.

Commonly known as crypto, the disease is highly contagious and can cause diarrhea, nausea and fever for several weeks. The parasite may be found in drinking water and recreational water throughout the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

2. I avoid water parks.
A few years ago a cousin took me and my 5-year-old-daughter to one near Philadelphia, and the next day my daughter was running a fever.

When I saw dozens of people, including many babies, in a huge pool, I should have known better than to let my daughter in for even a minute. Yuck.

4. I went to one once and never again.
Hey it was fun, but way too many people starting giving me the fecal creeps. Ocean is much bigger.

5. Very nice park in Geneva N.Y. My sympathies are with them
Many years ago my brother got very sick after swimming in Lake Ontario, not too far from where this happened in Geneva. He ingested water and probably picked up this crypto parasite since he laid around feeling miserable with gastrointestinal problems and fever for several weeks, ruining his entire summer.

6. Oh, dear. A neighborhood here will be getting sprayground soon.
The city is replacing a pool with a spray park, less liability, more sanitary. Ah huh.

Stay home, be safe, play in the tub, don't risk that upset tummy or a case of the runs......plus, there will be more room at the water park for me and the kids. Yippeee!

I guess shit really does happen.
