i remember reading an article of a guy who sought out to find the remains of the original penn station.. he ended up finding the old columns and a bunch of stuff half burried in a feild in the meadowlands.. was interesting.. he actually went to places where people thought it may be and dug..

5. Yeah, that makes me want to cry
everytime the subject is brought up. Its a shame that guy (developer, forgot name) was allowed to get away with so much before he was finally stopped. He wanted to "redo" Soho and Greenwich Village too. Thank God people stood up to him, but not before beautiful Penn Station was torn down. Such a shame.

9. Arghhhhh.....Robert Moses!
The greatest villain New York has ever known!

Bastard. Penn Station breaks my heart.

I now live in the West Village - it's the most charming, beautiful neighborhood in New York (IMHO). He wanted to put a freeway through it.

There is a good book by Robert Caro on him called "The Power Broker."

2. It's not luck.
It takes a lot of effort to fend off some of the developers. We still miss the original Penn Station.

4. when did the city
start doing the "historic building" zoning... meaning if it is a historic distric or building and the facads of buildings can not be changed...

6. The Landmarks Preservation Commission was created...
in the wake of the destruction of Penn Station.
A quote from someone about Penn Station: We used to enter New York like gods, now we scurry in like rats.
