Weiner to concede race to Ferrer
U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner planned to concede the Democratic mayoral primary to Fernando Ferrer, The Associated Press reported today.

The final count from the election was too close to call last night because the frontrunner, Ferrer, had barely reached the 40 percent of the vote he needed to avoid a runoff later this month.

With Weiner's concession, Ferrer, the former Bronx borough president, will face Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the general election on Nov. 8.With all precincts reporting last night, Ferrer's share of the vote stood at a tantalizing 39.9 percent.

Amid tepid turnout, Weiner pulled up a clear second in the four-way scrum with 29 percent. The AP, quoting Democrats close to Weiner's campaign, said the Congressman had scheduled a noon press conference outside his childhood home in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

3. Weiner concedes race to Ferrer
Weiner said he would make a public appearance with Ferrer tomorrow, adding that he would do anything Ferrer asked him to help defeat Bloomberg.

Without mentioning the runoff prospect, Ferrer gave an energized victory speech last night. "Take heart!" went part of it. "A new city is rising. Your time is now!"

"I have never been as hopeful as I am tonight," he said. City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, with 10 percent of the vote, conceded just before 10:30 p.m. yesterday.

He spoke about his record and goals in the powerful post in the past four years and vowed to "work tirelessly" for the Democratic nominee to "defeat Michael Bloomberg and take back City Hall."

4. Headline should be: Weiner Pulls Out
I thought a runoff might just give the democrats some momentum, but this works for me too.

Then again it seems as if democrats have been ready to give up on this race for weeks, which is unfortunate, because Bloomberg can and should be beaten.
