I'll be up visiting family and was just wondering if there were rallies, meetings, exhibits, etc., that I should check out. And feel free to recommend bars as well!

1. You'll want to pick up a Timeout NY - they have just about everything

listed, theater, restaurants, about town.

If you want to see theater there are two tks booths where you can get discounted tickets for the day's shows, one in Times Square, one at South Street Seaport.

They just reopened the observation deck at Rockefellar Ctr - but that could be a major tourist trap.

Foliage in Central Park should be reaching peak around then.

2. yes, get Time Out NY and the Village Voice

There are impromptu rallys and protests periodically at Union Square. Go there if you want to see if there is anything political going on.
And get Time OUt and the Voice to see EVERYTHING that is going on.

No frilly cocktails - but this is one of the oldest bars in Manhattan, a city classic and an echo of a golden, gun-slinging age. A saloon bar with swing-doors, sawdust floors and a long wooden counter, your drinks choice is light or dark ale. Women were not allowed in until 30 years ago: if they come now they’ll find a youthful, rowdy crowd mixing with elderly regulars and queuing round the corner.

To walk into McSorley's is to walk into well over a century of history. Sit down, order a round of darks and lights, and while away the hours of an afternoon talking with best friends, perfect strangers, and all the ghosts who have gone before. Never will I go to New York without saving a day for this place. Pure magic.

I grew up just across the river, first visited McSorley's in the early 70's. It was an amazing place with their own tasty brew before the age of endless clone microbreweries. I have never seen anything like it in the years since then. I visited it again in the 90's and didn't find it had changed much. Nothing stays exactly the same but McSorley's seems to age more slowly than other places. It may have acquired a bit of a tourist trap image but in my view it's still well worth a visit. Look for a picture on the wall of the pub with Civil War troops marching past.

Simply put, McSorley's is a unique and unparalleled social and drinking experience. McSorley's has been the superlative ale house in New York City for almost 2 centuries, yet despite its notoriety and popularity has managed to avoid becoming a caricature of itself. The pub's motto, "Be good or be gone," does not properly describe the behavior of the patrons, which goes far beyond "good"--everyone present is your drinking companion and friend for the duration of your stay. The physical space/design speaks to its age--it's unashamedly old and musty--and the atmosphere is one of genuine warmth and happiness that promotes revelry and a feeling of kinship among strangers. McSorley's is, quite simply, the pre-eminent drinking establishment.
