I confronted Margarita Lopez over endorsing Bloomberg
She had the gall to show up at the "Drive out the Bush regime" rally in Union Square to talk about the war - and chutzpa: our responsibility!
When she left the stage I asked her why did she endorse Bloomberg. She was about to start a speech "because I thought he was the best solution for the city" "But he supports war, and Bush and all the things you said you are against" "That's your opinion" she said in freeper fashion to which I made the pay off gesture in her face and turned.

1. well there's lots of democrats who are deserting to Bloomberg
in the most Dem big city in the country. I'm not sure we choose the best candidates to run for Mayor of NYC.

2. Bloomberg is not only a Repuke, but a former Democrat...bad
enough endorsing a slimy Repuke, but also a turncoat Dem.

3. Bloomberg is polling 45-50% with registered Democrats
As much as you might not like her endorsement of Bloomberg, keep in mind that you are in turn shunning half of NYC Dems in the process. Is Bloomberg the best Mayor that NYC could have? I'm not sure about that, but IMHO, and I'll get flamed, he hasn't been that bad, with the exception of the smoking ban and arrests done by police of protestors during the RNC. What I don't like about Ferrer is that he's a smarmy doofus. His diallo comment made me lose the remaing respect I had for him (which I first lost when he sat on his hands after Mark Green won the 2001 primary) and several of his proposals will not help the city, but hurt it. His proposal to tax individual stock trades will drive jobs away from the city (as much as I hate Wall Street, I do not believe we need to do this in order to show them who is boss). Ferrer just comes across as a big city machine pol. However, if I lived in NYC in would sit this out, but I think that NYC is better off with Bloomberg, but I would not vote for him because of his Bush connections but those are for symbolic reasons.

4. Can you define "smarmy doofus"? Can you define ....
"machine pol"?

Ferrer got *arrested* protesting the Diallo shootings... his clumsy, post-hoc comments that "it was not a crime" not withstanding.

Did Bloomberg say or do anything re. Diallo at the time? If not, why not? Has he offered an opinion as to whether or not the shooting was ,legally speaking, a crime? Has he been asked this question point blank by the media he has bought-off? If not, why not?

Re. "machine pol". Next to "machine pol" in the dictionary should be a picture of Peter Vallone, former NYC Council President. Next to the word "nepotism" should be a picture of his son. Both are supporting Bloomberg enthusiastically... as are notorious "machine pols" Shulman, Markowitz and Ed (Donald Manes) Koch. If you are trying to make a case for Bloomberg as an enemy of machine politics, you've got your work cut out for you.

It's interesting, but not persuasive, that some folks who live elsewhere think Bloomberg "hasn't been that bad."

5. Margarita Lopez: does anyone take her seriously?
She's a ranting, raving demagogue... despite the fact that in the past she has ranted and raved for generally worthy causes.

Still there's a fanatical and authoritarian streak there that is beyond offensive. A few years back I was at a victory celebration for a candidate she supported, listening to the victory speech, cup of soda in my hand. The cup of soda precluded me from clapping at the obvious applause lines. Lopez noticed this (from the PODIUM!) and kept waving at me to put down the soda and applaud. The girl needs to lighten up.

As with many fanatical/authoritarian types... a sudden political sea change is almost the norm. I'm not surprised about her support for Bloomberg. My guess is she thinks her support for Bloomberg ( America's premier dispenser of jobs, $$$ and other favors) will benefit her somehow... now that she's been term limited.

Of course, I may be wrong.

6. Agreed on authoritarian streek - her remarks on term limits
for city council revealed that to me. She was against the referendum because 'people are not smart enough to vote on that"
So, I voted Brian Elner in the primary
