10. I'm thinking of volunteering this time around
But only if they have a training for Thursday night. I don't want to end up like Joan and be stuck missing good happenings on Friday night, especially since that seems to be the better night for the DU gatherings when they are in conjunction with protests.

This time UPJ is working with NOW (one of my favorite organizations) so I'm really excited about this event. And without International Answer, hopefully the protest will stay on course and not bring all those little side groups in demanding mic time for their pet cause!

11. Hi there...
I'm not a New Yorker, but I wish I was. My best friend lives there and I am constantly taking the four hour bus ride from Boston to enjoy the city.

Anyway, someone pointed me here after I asked if any DUers were planning on meeting up during the April 29th demonstration. Anyone making any serious plans yet?

12. yes, there will be something most definately after the protest and
as Lynne pointed out, probably something the night before as well since there will be many coming into town that friday.
I am talking to a few other NYC DUers to find someplace nice for us all.
When it's finalized next month, i'll post another thread. The NY threads move very slow- you should be able to find it easily.

14. The March will be in downtown NYC (Manhattan)
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 03:39 PM by LynneSin
However, normally parade routes are not give out about a week before the event, mainly because the first option will totally suck and the protest groups will fight with the city until they get a decent route (for the RNC convention they had us walking down West Side drive which would have been seen by nobody!)

My guess will be around midtown manhatten somewhere, the other ones seemed to always start in that area. And NYC has some great subway systems, so even if for some reason they put us all they way to the north or south end of the island there is always the subway.

I'm probably either going to book the Sanford Hotel or Avalon Vincci. Both are on 32nd street near Park Avenue & Broadway. I was suppose to stay at the Vincci the last DU gathering in NYC but my group downsized and I couldn't get a smaller room at the last minute at the hotel. So I switched to the Sanford, which was a very nice lower priced hotel that was 2 blocks from Penn Station.

There will definately be DUers there (myself included). If you book your room now and find out that DUers are staying at a different hotel, then there is no cost for you to switch hotels. Most places have a 48hr cancellation policy so grab a room now while you can!

16. Any of them are about the same including Newark
I usually drive when I go to NYC but then again I'm two hours away in Wilmington.

I think it really depends on how much you pack. If I'm correct, all three airports are connected by the New York Subway, but distance-wise I think that LGA would be the closests.

Reason I mentioned about packing light - all of those airports will probably take you right down to Penn Station (I know that Newark does) and from there you're right on Times Square.

I found this map from a hotel so you get an idea of where the airports are located. I'm probably staying somewhere near the N & H in Manhatten on that map

18. not correct, none of the three are direct via NYC subway
there are on average 2 connections for each before you get to Manhattan. And the one at JFK has a big frickken staircase, too. The one from La Guardia is easy to screw up, and the connections are bad. Newark goes to the PATH at Newark which leaves you at 6th and 32nd St.
So if there are two of you, a cab ride is in order, they have flat fares. If it's one person, they all have excellent express to NYC bus service that do a loop through midtown, that will pass by times square, penn station, east 34th st and grand central.
the busses also stick closer to schedule than the train to the trains (which from La Guardia is actually a bus to the train).
Lynne you scoundrel, you've FLOWN to NYC!! how decadent, wow!

19. Actually Newark is direct via NJ Transit into Penn Station
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 03:47 PM by LynneSin
Because when I do take the train into NYC it's usually the Northeast Corridor that connects Trenton to NYC and has a stop at Newark Airport

And I've never flown into NYC. When you live as close to it as I do you take the train or just drive. I've also never flown into DC but I've used their airports.

Thanks for correcting me!

20. you have to switch trains to their Air Trans thing at Newark.....
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 04:50 PM by bettyellen
so there are annoying connections to make with any of the train options, but Newark might well be the easiest by train. i remember that shuttle being nice, but i only took it to the long term parking (and yes, from my car, it was a bus to the shuttle, just to PARK for $30 a day!!)
who'da thunk it? busses and cabs are totally worth it.

23. It's official - I know nothing about NYC airports
 which is probably one of my strengths from the DC protest was that I know DC airports pretty well.

I would probably take a cab from the airport, but I know some folks are coming in on a budget which is why I try to figure out the whole train thingie.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll stick with finding decent hotels at a cheap price. You might want to recommend the Stanford (that's where we stayed). Our room was only $129/night which was a great rate for a downtown hotel room and the room was pretty decent. However, I think I'm going to get our room this time at the hotel where everyone else stayed at which was at the Vincci. That was much nicer but the only reason we didn't stay there was because Joan and I wanted to downgrade our room to something smaller and there was nothing left in the hotel.

Ok, here is actually a question I have. If someone wanted to find a cheap room that wasn't in downtown Manhatten where is the best place to look. I know in DC, I steered a ton of people over to Alexandra/Arlington because the rooms were cheaper, the parking was free and it was definately a nice neighborhood to stay. Any recommednations for outside the NYC area? I've always felt that NJ was kinda :scared:

24. Budget hotels, hmmm. I think it's totally worth it looking into Hotwire.
I know people flip out when they hear you won't know the name of the hotel till you book it. But..... it's usually at least 60% off, they give you a very clear idea of the neighborhood it's in, the amneties, how well it's rated, etc. If you do a search on Tripadvisor, you can pretty much guess what hotel it is as they share a rating system. I do know it's tough to cancell the booking, unless your creidt card is extra helpful with stuff like that.
As far as out of Manhattan, you're right, NJ has slim pickins, there are two places in Jersey City (one is a double tree) that would be near the Path, i wouldn't recommend you stay some other towns where you need to take a bus. The PATH runs all night, and it's very safe.
Outside of Manhattan I know there's a cluster of hotels around each of the (sorry Lynne!) airports. And the ones near JFK are quite a hike to Manhattan, so forget that. I'd say do a tripadvisor search fro Queens, might say near La Guardia and find what has a subway near (call them, ask- sometimes "near" is 8 blocks!) . Tripadvisor is great for sorting out the options.

There was also an article in the NY Times travel section on cheaper NYC hotels. I'll have to search for it and add the link here.

LOL the airport thing is hard to get a handle on till you have tried it...the MTA here does such good publicity that people think there are quick easy trains to the planes. I thought it would be easy too, till i tried it. For $6-8 more per person, you could be on a warm comfy bus not sweating a connection. It's worth it, especially if you have a suitcase

32. JFK has the flat fee
not La Guardia. And only on rides FROM the airport, not to. However, the fare to/from LaGuardia when I was there with the KOEB wasn't bad at all. True, I shared the cab with others, but I'd do it even if I were travelling solo.

17. La Guardia generally has more on time flights and is usually faster into
Manhattan. The only pain with La G is very early or very late if you want to take a direct to midtown bus, I believe the scedule is shorter than JFK's. But there are always taxis, I think they are the same (flat fee) to Manhattan. But there's always more traffic and people at JFK, generally the whole process as well as the ride into the city takes a lot longer.

http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mta/airtrain.htm

If your destination is midtown, there are lots of buses to Newark - but I spent a long time standing waiting in the cold when the heaters didn't work.

25. there are lots of direct express busses to all three airports,
and it was my suggestion that they are the easiest option for the money for any of them.
i was just saying that i wouldn't recommend taking the subway to the MTA bus in Queens to LA Guardia.
That's generally the way people try to go through mass transit. Have no idea how employees go, but the express busses are for anyone, they generally keep to their schedule pretty well, and you can reserve in advance. There are a few companies that serve La Guardia, it's easy to google.

27. It's easier to drive to NJ than through Brooklyn or Queens
For the buses as well as passenger cars, which is why I fly out of the Newark when I'm headed into the city. But living in Brooklyn or Queens, I prefer to spend subway fare instead of express buses.

For an out of towner, I'd stay off the scenic routes.

Looks like you can get 3 to a room (2 queens & a twin in the suite). I'm bringing along a friend from Corpus (who btw snores like a buzz saw) but since she's never been to NYC, we're arriving on the 26th to get some sight-seeing done. The Yankees are also playing on Thursday night, so I'd like to catch a game (just to say I've seen a game at Yankee stadium).

I think Rocky's will be fine for Friday night although I also liked Rudy's which has that alcove out back so the smokers can smoke & drink at the same time. I think this time we're scattered all over NYC for where we're staying but since it'll be warmer we could venture over to 9th avenue.

66. the neighborhood is completely different these days...
34th would still be sort of creepy at night but 42 and above is a whole different world from what it used to be. much more residential.
It's actually a much busier neighborhood (loads of people on the street as well as more places to eat)
than that irish place on the east side.

74. Yes, Here's one, and I can get you more later :))
If you
want a safe (and very liberal!) neighborhood, I'de suggest Greenwich Village.
It's close to subway transportation, and you do not have to be
afraid of walking the streets late. It's a college town (NYU), which keeps the village always lively!

Here's one suggestion, for example:
The Bitter End
147 Bleecker St., New York, NY 10012
between Thompson St. and LaGuardia Pl.
212-673-7030

Hours
Sun-Thu, 7pm-2am; Fri-Sat, 7pm-4am
Nearby Subway Stops
A, B, C, D, E, F, V at W. 4th St.-Washington Sq.

Scene
Neighborhood Bar - Although there is no food menu, customers are welcome to bring
food and order in.

78. they have entertainment. and a cover charge, no?
as i recall it gets pretty loud. most people are meeting lots of other DUers for the first time and really people mostly want to talk, not shout. so.. avoiding loud music, which killed the last meetup is kinda important to me.
i am narrowing it down to a few places that have really good beers, drinks, food not too expensive, and alt food nearby... as well as some seating we can kinda grab. but no cover charges, loud music and no entertainment. the entertainment will be insulted, because they'll just piss us off more than likely.
possible mchales (48 + 8th) , the corner bistro (west village) and there's two others i forgot. there's a place semi in soho a friend is checking out too.

It's not often that DUers can get together en masse and an environment where we can talk is important. If the hotel bar doesn't have karaoke on Friday night, maybe that's a good place for Friday. Sure would be convenient for us!

87. My meet-up wish list
Since I'm coming from waaaay out of town, I'd like to meet up with other DUers at a place where we can talk & be heard, at least on Saturday. I feel like I did back at the march in September, I'm going to be tired, want food, a comfortable place to sit, some drinks, & an atmosphere conducive to conversation. I don't like having to yell at people, especially over a band/performer. I don't equate loud background noise with having a good time. I'd also like a place that's a bit larger than Rocky's. The seating was bad, & it got very claustrophic & loud in there back in February, plus some people had to pay cover for that performer we all had to shout over. I thought that sucked.

Since NYC is open 24/7, why not have a meet-up in a place like I described & then an "after meet-up" somewhere else so those that do want to get wild & loud can do both? :)

89. I feel bad about what happened at Rockys
We used them before when we metup in NYC for the RNC Convention and the place was awesome. But looking back - that was a friday night that we met there (mind you, I was just coming out of the hospital the day before that party and coming down from a major morphine-based painkiller high. So I kept thinking we met on Saturday night but it turns out to have been Friday)

I wouldn't completely rule out using Rocky's again; however I would probably only use it for Friday nights and perhaps meeting there earlier than normal (we were scheduling the party around dinner)

But I have been in contact to find better suggestions and I'm continplating a Friday night roadtrip just to check some of these places out (not that I need an excuse to go to NYC).

As for afterparties - they're all kinda just last minute things - someone willing to open their hotel room for people to hang out, steal from the mini-bar and stand in the bathtub to smoke a cigerette outside the tiny open window in there.

101. Saturday Meeting point at the rally
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 07:20 AM by LynneSin

http://www.april29.org/article.php?id=3211

UPJ will be staging people in the blue shaded area of the above map starting at 10:30 am on the 29th. The blue "X" is where we'll try to meetup inside the staging area of the protest. That shaded area is broadway - we'll try to be at the corner closest to 22nd street and on the side closest to park Avenue. We will try to get to that location around 10:30 in the morning.

The Green "X" located above the staging area is the closest subway station on the Yellow line (N/R). Mind you, if they get overwhelmed at that station don't be suprised if they close it down and you have to hike it a few blocks.

As for breakfast, I think with everyone getting into town, getting oriented and getting awake from Friday night's party, it's best that everyone just get breakfast on their own. I'm at the Hotel Stanford, which is about a block from Penn Station. If you get in early enough into the city and want to have breakfast with us, let me know.

Hi everybody. Are there any people from Long Island going to the NY meet? I loved to meet some progressive people and those brave enough to do something about this insanity we are presently enduring in this country. 121. Where in Brooklyn?
I won't be coming into Manhattan tonight ... but if you're near Cortelyou Road there's a cool hangout.

122. In Williamsburg, right off the Bedford Avenue sub stop
One stop away from 14th St. in Manhattan. Where is Cortelyou Road in relation to that?

123. A whole 'nother subway line
You're convenient to "the city" and that's where the connection would be to the Brighton Line. You're in a trendy 'hood of your own - for us in Midwood, progressive hangouts are harder to find. See you at the march!

128. Sorry I missed the DU meetup on April 29
I did not have the address with me and I had sporadic cell phone connectivity so I could not check DU online using my cell phone.

This is the BEST demonstration I have ever attended (and I've been to a few very large demos---1991, 1992, and 1993 in DC as well as the 1996 Democratic National Convention and 1999 in Seattle). I LOVE NYC!!!

If I can manage it I WILL attend another demonstration in NYC and meet DUers then.
