NEW YORK -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Suozzi sought to burnish his image as a chief executive Wednesday before a group of New York City business leaders, while also taking a shot at his opponent's experience as the state's top law enforcement official.

While never mentioning Spitzer by name, Suozzi tried to portray himself as better suited for the governor's job because of his experience as Nassau County executive.
"I've balanced budgets, I've negotiated union contracts, made changes in the way that we deliver services, in the way that we improve people's quality of life," Suozzi told several hundred participants at a Crain's New York Business breakfast forum.

He said state government is "passing laws that are mandates to local governments, it's avoiding responsibility for problems like high local taxes and low performing schools. ... The state needs to be made accountable."
