New York City DU'ers -- can you help a visitor?
I am thinking of visiting NYC and staying at a hotel in Jersey City near the Pavonia/Newport PATH station.

We will probably spend a lot of time in the theater district.

1) It looks like we can take the subway from Jersey City to the theater district. True?

2) If true, is it safe? Especially after an evening theater performance?

Although I'd love to stay in or near Times Square, I'm not sure it would be feasible.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

1. I don't think that you can take the subway directly.
You have to take one of the Jersey trains. Then you might have to transfer to the subway. You can probably save money by staying in Jersey, but you can probably find something around $150 in Manhattan if you try hard enough. Maybe Priceline a couple days before?

The city is safe. Especially the tourist areas like Times Square and the Theater district.

2. A couple options in Manhattan
This place is 1.5 miles from Time Square. Rates are less than astronomical:

Or this is close also, kind of like a motel but great views and near some great breakfast, etc. But dirt cheap and safe neighborhood ($95 - $110):

3. Thanks for the replies, but I have to stay in Jersey City
I'm thinking of cashing in some hotel frequent-stay points, and the only hotels available for the dates I need are in Jersey City.

Would this be workable? How difficult would it be to get to the attractions such as the theater district, etc.? It looks like I can take the NJ PATH train to NYC.

4. The PATH becomes like a subway
You can easily get to downtown or midtown Manhattan without a transfer.

Safe? Try not to travel alone; crowds are safe but we've got our fair share of predators. If you think someone is paying undue attention to you, don't flatter yourself ... prevent crime by staying alert. If you look like a dangerous target, they'll move on.

You should be able to comfortably walk from a PATH station to a Broadway show or any other midtown attraction.

Welcome to NYC.
