Picnic - Sunday July 23rd at Noon in Central Park
Due to the chance of rain on Saturday we are changing the location slightly. Four of us passed this around in PMs and agreed that the move was a good idea. KurtNYC scouted out a place that is uphill a bit and is sure to be dry. We will be just north of the Turtle Pond; south of the actual oval of the Great Lawn. eg. between the Great Lawn and the Turtle Pond. Being between two well known landmarks should make us very easy to find.

Thank you, Kurt! :)

Written Directions: Enter Central Park on the north side of 81st and Central Park West. You will immediately come to a large tree and a drinking fountain, the path splits here. Take the right-hand (more southern) path toward the Great Lawn. After about 100 yards you will come to the briddle path, we will be on the left between the briddle path and the road. If you cross the paved road you have gone too far.

Kurt says he has a map that he can post. So please look for that below.

More people have confirmed the stuff they're bringing. The only thing we still need is blankets and/or chairs to sit on.

PM me if you have questions. :hi:

Thom

1. How to contact me.
If you're coming to the Picnic and you want to have a phone number to call in case you don't see us, PM me. I'll give you my cell phone number.
:)

2. Directions and map to the Turtle Pond location - please read
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 07:13 AM by KurtNYC
The directions at the top of the thread are actually to the original location. The new location is almost directly in the middle of the park:

Enter Central Park on the north side of 81st and Central Park West. You will immediately come to a large tree and a drinking fountain, the path splits here. Take the right-hand (more southern) path toward the Great Lawn. Cross the Briddle Path (shown in purple) and cross the paved road. You should see a stone building with bathrooms on your right, keep going, next you pass the Delacorte Theater where they do Shakespeare in the Park. Then you should be at the southern tip of the Great Lawn. Look to your right (south, toward the pond and Belvedere Castle) and you should see us there.

From the Eastside: Enter the park just south of the Metropolitan Museum. Walk to the Great Lawn and find us on the southern end as above.

In the event of a downpour, we may take refuge under the awnings that wrap around the Delacorte.

3. Artist's conception of what the picnic will look like...

We would be the white spots just above the water's edge there. I say "Artist's Conception" because I have never seen the Great Lawn quite that empty.

And here is the view looking toward the castle:

Weather is supposed to be about 77 and broken clouds. I am bringing a vegan pesto past salad and plates, bowls, napkins, forks and just a few spoons. If your item needs spoons.. I have only 5 or so. I also plan to bring a blue plastic tarp -- not sure if that is permitted but would be great to sit on or have under the picnic blanket if it is.

8. Thank you. But mostly I just listened to other people. :)
People suggested the area where we wanted to be, and the specific location where we ended up, and the date of the picnic, etc. The picnic was awesome, and that is because I didn't do much by myself. :)

Thank you, Paul (and DJ), Kurt, Fredda, Elyse, Theresa, Tari, and Priyanka (and Lisa)!
:grouphug:

A number of people ended up not being able to make it. :( I'm sorry you couldn't be there. I hope you can make it to whatever we do next.

12. Thom did a great job!
He even managed to get us good weather. A cheer also for Kurt, who picked a much better spot for us.
(In the picture, we look like pink bookends). :-)

9. Photo of most of us at the picnic

Liontamer and Paul Ho managed to avoid being in the photo. x(
LionessPriyanka's new GF is also not in the photo.

So, from left to right we have Cassandra, InfoManiac, DJ (Paul's son), LionessPriyanka, me, KurtNYC, Fredda Weinberg and part of some random child in the background.
:)

Behind us is the Turtle Pond, and behind that is Belvedere Castle up on the hill. We were in a really beautiful spot.

11. I'm moving into my Pol Pot phase; no pictures. That's....
>>>Liontamer and Paul Ho managed to avoid being in the photo. >>>

... how he managed to survive in the jungle for 20 years.

Lively group, to understate radically. Thanks for putting it all together.
