District 20: Kirsten Gillibrand response to Sweeney attack ads. Video.
I have yet to see this on TV, though my friend did and tipped me off about it, so I found it on-line. Kirsten Gillibrand has risen above the tone of the Sweeney attack ads by airing this classy response, featuring Academy Award-nominated actor David Strathairn, who reprises his persona of Edward R. Murrow from Good Night, and Good Luck. Excellent job, IMHO, and I really believe that she has a shot at defeating Sweeney, this time around...:woohoo:

4. Yes, I've seen that one, too. And I just don't get it.
I'm from Glens Falls and Nathan Brown, who was killed in Iraq, is a local boy, from South Glens Falls, and this was big news here. I didn't know him, but my friend plays in a band with his father, agreed that it is very strange that his mother would support Sweeney. After Nathan was killed, they had a big band concert in the park, to raise funds to send supplies to his comrades, and there was obvious anti-Bush* feeling there.

And I've listened to this ad numerous times and still don't get it. Sweeney supports the war and she doesn't. This woman's son was killed there. She said she met Sweeney at her son's funeral and he said he would "do something." What could he possibly do for her now?! This is just incomprehensible to me...

5. The Times Union profiled her a week or so ago
The article made it seem as if she does not really oppose the war as much as the commercial suggests. She said she wouldn't support the troops being sent home right now. I feel terrible for this woman - for the loss of her son, but also for being used in the way that she is.

7. Thanks, my friend.
As I said, I just don't get it. I'll make it a point to look up the TU article and will send it to my friend who knows Nathan Brown's father... But it's not my friend's fault that these people are so beguiled by Sweeney, since he's one of us, and doesn't get it, either...:-(

And I agree that these people are being used. That's what people like Bush* and Sweeney do. It's unfortunate that they don't understand this, but they're feeling lot of grief and probably aren't thinking straight.;(

It's great to see you, my friend, and I'm glad that you're following this important race! Thanks so much for the info!:D

6. I wish I could vote for Gillibrand
I live in Albany now so I'm out of her district. The latest poll numbers weren't very good for her.

9. I did for a while when I moved back from NYC...
but where I am now is very close to work in downtown Albany. :hi: We have got to have an Upstate/Capitol Region area meetup. Maybe we can organize something around a campaign event.

10. Laura Bush is coming to Saratoga Springs
on October 4th, there should be a big protest. Maybe we could all meetup then? It will probably be during the day though.

And if anyone wants to canvas for Kirsten there is a union Labor to Neighbor event Sunday at the Exit 8 Park and Ride (next to the CVS), 1pm (union households, Clifton Park and Halfmoon)

12. I know about the Laura Bush event.
I grew up in Saratoga, so I know where she'll be, The Hall of Springs, South Broadway. I've been challenged to show up with protest signs. She's coming to support Sweeney, who can use all the help he can get. I'm available during the day, so could do this, but I don't want to appear on the news, LOL.:D

11. That would be very cool.
I'm currently living in Ballston, so I'm even closer than I was. And the midterms are very close. MoveOn is setting up regional offices, so we have good reasons to get together. We should have a Capital region meet-up. I know a few people, from DU, that I could ask... :D

14. Kirsten now has a strong but careful response to the Brown ad
I first saw it on TV on Sunday. It's the first one, tagged "Best" on her multimedia page.
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/Multimedia
Also note that the Gillibrand campaign responded quickly to the CREW "Beyond Delay" report naming Sweeney among the 20 most corrupt. The report came out last Wednesday and they "pounced" the next day. I suspect some DUer saw it posted in GD and notified them quickly. ;-) Details are on Kirsten's home page.

Regarding Rick and Kathy Brown, they really are against the war but nonetheless appreciative of Sweeney's attention. Kathy, I am told, has gotten angry phone calls about the ad and confontations at the supermarket. They are not very politically savvy, unfortunately, but God bless'em they lost their dear son in the service of our country and politics doesn't rise anywhere near as high as the level of that sacrifice. Hopefully we can kick Sweeney out, take over Congress and have fewer tragedies like the Browns have suffered.

15. Thank you.
I was aware of the report on Sweeney, but also saw it posted on Gillibrand's site. This couldn't have been more perfect timing for her, but she needs to get the word out about this. We know, since we follow these things, but the average voter is lucky to read anything or even catch an ad on TV.

And of course the Browns are appreciative of Sweeney's attention. These people are grieving. But I still don't see the sense of the ad. Kathy Brown said that Sweeney told her that he would "do something." That was it. There was no indication of what he did, if anything, and what could he possibly do for her now?! It's far too late. Her son is dead. Is he insisting on bringing the remaining troops home, as Dennis Kucinich has been, all along?! If Sweeney's changed in his support for Bush*'s war, I haven't heard about it...:-(
