That's why her proud disavowal of the so-called "party leaders" should raise a few amused eyebrows with the opposition. The contradiction certainly isn't lost on her opponent John Hall, a Dutchess County Democrat and activist who is best known as the singer-songwriter for the '70s band, Orleans. Hall's press secretary, Tom Staudter, said yesterday that no one should be fooled into thinking that Kelly's "No" vote was cast without the express advanced approval of the GOP leadership.

"This is a woman who's taken over $60,000 in oil company contributions," Staudter said. "This last time, they had enough votes for the energy bill, so they cut her loose so she could vote against drilling in the Arctic National wildlife Refuge, while previously she had voted for the drilling."

He said it was "funny" that Kelly would attempt to present herself as an independent voice in Congress.

"For Sue to divorce herself form George Bush is like Laurel trying to divorce himself from Hardy," he said. "It's like peanut butter divorcing itself from jelly and Abbott telling Costello that the act is over."

1. this is my district, and John Hall is all over the place . . .

he has signage everywhere, and there's a ton of good buzz about him . . . believe it or not, except for the most hard core right-wingers, Pete Seeger's support and endorsement is a net positive . . . over the past 30 years, Pete's work for the environment has made him something of a hero to many, and at least not a demon to those who remember the commie scare stuff . . .

we have an excellent chance of picking up this seat, and ending up with a really good anti-war environmentalist as our representative in Congress . . . if you can spare a few bucks for John's campaign, it will be money well spent . . .

btw, we vote on the old lever machines, so Diebold will have no role in the vote counting . . .

2. Lovin' it...

She's declined Hall's challenge to a series of debates. Even if she agrees now, it will look bad for her. Let's keep the pressure up...LTTEs, daily if necessary.

She is definitely on the defensive, and she's never been in that position before. She's never had to run on the issues or defend her record--and she can't make a move without RNC pulling the strings.

This seat is WINNABLE, folks. Go team!

3. Hall needs more presence in the South of District 19

I live in Northern Westchester and follow the news closely I haven't heard much since the primary, I even emailed John Hall for campaign mailings- nada. I deeply resent being represented by a Republican, and think John Hall is a good candidate. He seems to have strong support in the Beacon area, but far too many people down here barely know his name. There should be more Democratic Party support for Mr. Hall, local democratic political stars should lend their support, he needs to get his name out there. John Hall is our best chance to oust Sue Kelly and the time is right.

6. I live in Northern Westchester and agree. There are still signs up for

other Dem candidates from the primary and then I have seen tv ads for Kelly and heard one on WHUD for her and nothing from John. I did receive two calls to support John yesterday. One was very annoying..it was one of those electronic thingies relating how Kelly has disserved our district. I hate those types of calls.

7. Next time you see a Kelly commercial

Notice how her party affiliation is NEVER MENTIONED. She is proudly trumpeting herself (pun intended) as an "independent voice." My ass.

8. I've noticed that! She is also following the dictate of the GOP -

talk only (lie only) about local issues. I just saw some road signs of hers yesterday. Big and of course no mention of being a Republican. I wish John had more noticeable signs. His are very understated.

9. I've been polled three different times (telephone) over the past 6 weeks.

Today they first asked for a male voter, but my husband wasn't home, so they took me instead. Bwahahaha. Here were some of the questions today:

2) Rate these names (if you now them) as very favorable, favorable, unfavorable, very unfavorable:

4) Do you want to hear more about Sue Kelly? (No.)

6) How would you characterize yourself?: Strong Democratic, lean Democratic, lean Republican, strong Republican (I fudged this one: lean Democrat when I am a strong Democrat. I have, however, voted for Republicans in two local elections, one in Illinois and one in Virginia. I should have said strong Republican, in retrospect).
