Vote for the Crook -- It's Important
On Tuesday, after much thought, I'll be voting to re-elect Alan Hevesi as State Controller. Despite his clearly illegal use of Government resources for his wife, and his unwillingness to admit it until he got caught, it is clear that Republic Chris Callaghan is barely competent to handle the job, much less be the sole trustee of the state employee's pension fund. Add to that, Chris Callaghan is now using ads to tout his New York Times endorsement, despite the fact that they were basically contingent on him hiring someone more competent than he was to do the job. I have every confidence that Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer will use his influence to compel Hevesi to eventually step down, at which point a competent and ethical replacement will be appointed.

1. I agree.
I am voting for Hevesi. I am from Saratoga County and Callaghan has been horrible for our county.

I heard a news blurb that Pataki has some report on the situation he might release before tuesday. If it's bad for hevesi I'm sure he will release it. In spite of how bad the report is, I expect Hevesi to win reelection

6. report on the situation released

Updated: 12:40 p.m. ET Nov 4, 2006
ALBANY, N.Y. - A lawyer appointed by the governor has determined there is enough evidence to remove Comptroller Alan Hevesi from office for using a state employee to chauffeur his wife, another blow to Hevesi’s already battered re-election campaign.

However, the lawyer, former U.S. attorney David Kelley, told Gov. George Pataki in a report issued Saturday that he was not “in a position to advise you at this time to proceed with a recommendation for removal.”

The state Ethics Commission determined last week that Hevesi, the state’s financial watchdog, had violated the law when he used a staffer to drive for his wife. Hevesi claimed the driver was needed to provide security for his wife, but the bipartisan commission said state police found no threat that justified the arrangement.

3. Exactly Right
I agree that the scenario will play out as you outlined. I don't know what the rules are but Spitzer's appointment may not be able to serve a full term. There may need to be a special election next year. If so we can pick someone qualified and honest. We don't need Callaghan and we don't need any Republicans.

It isn't a vote for Hevesi, it's a vote for Dems to take back NYS government including the comptroller spot. In the past I've voted other parties besides Dem at times but this year I'll vote straight Dem. We need to send a tidal wave statewide and nationwide rejecting the pukes and everything they stand for.

4. He is still leading in the polls by a good margin
But if he gets re-elected, then Pataki will rush to take action against him before Spitzer gets sworn in.
In any case, I'm definitely voting for him.

5. You can count on me.
I'd much rather have Spitzer replace him later than have Callaghan fuck with the pension plans.

7. I just concluded the same thing today..
so, I'll be voting for him as well (as opposed to not voting for the position.) I had some brief interractions with a former Repuke State Controller when he was a trustee at a place where I worked (after he left gov't) and it was revealing. I once got into a 'debate' with him at a meeting over our pension financial info, where he was insisting incorrectly that something needed to be changed. After about 10 minutes, the committee chair interrupted and told me to send him a memo lol which is what he usually did when another trustee could not understand that s/he didn't comprehend the point that was being made. It really made me wonder what type of candidates get run for that position.

8. I love Hevesi.
I think having the tax-payers cart his wife around is probably the worst thing he's ever done--which essentially makes him Santa Claus in his peer group.

I truly hope this isn't the end of his career.

10. My Pension Funds depends on it being in the most capable...
hands....at least if Hevesi is forced to resign we cane fall back on Carl McCall he was not only a comptroller but also a pension system member. Never trust a guy with a bow tie to handle your money.
