NEW YORK — Police shot three young men who had just left a bachelor party at a strip club early Saturday, killing one man on the day of his wedding, according to police and witnesses. One of the survivors was in critical condition.

The shooting happened just after 4 a.m. near Club Kalua in Queens, said Officer Kathleen Price. She said there were no reports that any officers were wounded. It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting. As many as eight officers may have been involved, said Sgt. Mike Wysokowski, another department spokesman.

"All I know, they was celebrating," said Denise Ford, who said her son was one of the survivors. She said the man who died was the groom. "The guy was getting married today."

Relatives said the dead man was Sean Bell, 23.

Robert Porter, who identified himself as Bell's first cousin, said he was supposed to be a DJ at the wedding. "I still don't want to believe it, a beautiful day like this, and he was going to have a beautiful wedding, he was going to live forever with his wife and children. And this happened," Porter said.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said family members told him that there were no guns in the young mens' car and "there was no reason for the police to shoot."

1. They shot the groom after his bachelor party.
It is not clear yet just what happened.

Just another justifiable police shooting? Stay tuned...

7. To each his own
My sisters and I were out at least that late - at a strip club - the night before my youngest sister was married. And we are very 'normal'. :)

Where do you get that stupid notion? Wow, you really think he deserved to die?

You must be pretty sick to say something like that.

12. It's our system....this is a systemic problem.
We need a system simliar to Europe, and especially in Italy, where police do not troll around......but sit in their boxes at street corners..and when you need them...U GO TO or CALL THEM. These posts, for example, in a city lik eNY would be everywhere...but the key is the Cop no longer has the right to search people out and ultimatley destroy them...... Police posts need to be all over...but the roll of the police needs to stop being that of search and destroy.

Police should sit at every corner like good doggies until needed.

15. Why was this switched to the New York forum
where nobody will see it? It is certainly of widespread interest.

An another annoyance, I tried to post to the original thread in breaking news and after I finished typing my loong post, I got the message that the thread had been locked. I had to go searching to find out that the thread had been moved. I guess that I will have to type the whole darned thing over again.

18. When my wife saw the news story...
When my wife saw the news story, she commented that if a tough-looking someone dressed in street clothes followed her out of a bar to her vehicle, and then stepped in front of her vehicle to block her path as she tried to pull away, she'd assume they were a mugger or carjacker, and would probably keep going and make them get out of the way. That's what most of us would probably think. And if you asked any security expert what to do if you are trying to pull out of a parking space in a bad neighborhood late at night, and a young, tough-looking male blocks your way, "lay on the horn and keep going" would probably be the dominant advice--not "stop, turn off the radio, and listen to what he's shouting to see if he's an undercover police officer instead of a carjacker."

It's not entirely clear whether the people in the car knew the person who followed them out of the bar and cut off their escape route was a police officer, or if they thought he was a criminal. But I can see how I or my wife could get shot, were we ever in a similar situation. Scary thought.

19. 4AM in NYC is normal
Sure, its late. But lots of "normal" folks stay out until 4AM in NYC. All the bars and clubes are open that late. This also happened in a "decent" section of Jamiaica, Queens, right next to the train statrion I believe. So there would be lots of people and activity around there (although not at 4am).
