Former U.S. Rep. John Sweeney is laying the groundwork to attempt a political comeback, possibly in a 2008 challenge to the woman who defeated him in November, said Warren County Republican Chairman Michael Grasso.
"There's a few scenarios that could play out," Grasso said. "Let's just say none of those options would be for lower office (than the House of Representatives)."

About a week before the election, Sweeney and his wife, Gayle, acknowledged the State Police came to their home on Dec. 2, 2005, to answer a complaint, but the Sweeneys claimed a police report leaked to newspapers was fabricated.
New information will be coming forth soon that will cast the State Police visit to the Sweeney home in a different light, said Grasso, who said he had lunch with Sweeney last week.
moreAlright, so I was manning phones on election day last year and the police visit story never came up. Y'know what folks wanted to talk about? Health care and Republican corruption and the occupation of Iraq. I hope Sweeney's the candidate again cuz that'll be an easy win for Gillibrand.
