NEW YORK (Associated Press) -- A man jumped to his death Friday out the window of a 69th-floor law office in the Empire State Building.

Police responded to the New York City landmark shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg _ covered in a gray sock _ on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor.

The tragedy in the 102-story building closed portions of the busy Midtown Manhattan street while the investigation continued.

The name of victim, a lawyer in his 30s, was not immediately released.

5. The dude was a lawyer. Not a stock market monkey.
He probably worked hard on a case he lost, lost his spouse, lost his job, his wiener fell off, who knows...

A shame, but he is at peace.

I wonder what his final thoughts were.

10. Probably along the lines of ...
"Gee, this is fun. Wait. No. There's ground down there. This was a stupid idea. That was the 50th floor, 50 to go. What? I'm going to hit a setback? I'm screwed out of the time it takes to fall 30 floors! I'll sue the archite... (splat)"

But seriously, there's at most one person whose death I don't mourn at least a little, and that one person wasn't this nameless lawyer.

4. Oh man, that guy was having a double critical day. That would have to
be a HORRIBLE way to commit suicide. (I know, no way would be good.)

11. How awful! It's always so shocking to hear of these things.
I live here and your post was the first I had heard of it. It scared me because I know a lot of people in that demographic. You just never know what's going on inside some people. They might seem ok on the outside, but we all have our demons. It's such a sad, lonely thing to have to do.

12. I know exactly how he feels.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't read LBN and want to jump. Luckily for me, my home is a single story.

13. Hmm. Must have been wearing a grey suit.
I'm glad I wasn't on that sidewalk. What a messy way to commit suicide... making such a public statement and really hurting a lot of innocent people. Imagine what children must have thought. How do you get the image of a severed leg on a sidewalk out of your head? I'm still freaking out from the hotel fight scene in Borat!

17. "How do you get the image of a severed leg on a sidewalk out of your head?"
Fairly easily, I'd imagine. Hell, my current desktop background is a croc with a forearm in its mouth.

Then again, not everyone hits my level of emotional damage.

16. What is this? Fox News?
Are the mods asleep?

Is this worthy of LBN?

If so, I can post crazy local news deaths all day long.
