The Ulster County Industrial Development Agency is considering scrapping the Counties prevailing wage law. That law mandates that workers constructing all public building projects or working at jobs that get IDA tax breaks be paid a decent wage.
A local business, Colony Liquors, has requested tax subsidies and an exemption from the prevailing wage law. That request has spiraled into an attempt to kill an essential labor protection that keeps good paying jobs in the community.
At the last IDA board meeting, the issue was tabled after 500 union members packed three floors of the Ulster County Government Building and demanded prevailing wage remain untouched. The discussion was supposed to reopen on December 13th, but it was changed to Thursday the 6th at the last minute. The cynic in me suspects the powers that be don't want people coming to speak their mind...
The meeting is now scheduled for Thursday, December 6th at 5:00 pm. It will be held at J. Watson Bailyer Middle School on 118 Merilina Ave in Kingston. Please make every effort to attend! If enough people show up angry, we can put this issue to rest once and for all and protect workers in our community!
