Are there any small banks in New York?
I had my personal accounts at WaMu which just got eaten up by JP Morgan Chase. I don't want to bank there but haven't been back in New York long enough to know of any good reputable small banks in NY. Can anyone help?

BTW, I debated whether to post this question because it may not seem political enough. On second thought, who we patronize makes a statement about us. I don't want to patronize these large banks and would prefer to support a community bank.

Couldn't be *more* political, seems to me.

I had a CD there ( Coop City) back in the 90s. Can't really speak to the efficacy of their banking services as I'm mostly tied up ( mortgage, etc.) with the 'big fellas'. Not sure how that happened; one of "destiny's merry pranks", I guess.

But I vote with you. "Act locally..." etc. and so forth.

2. Lots if you look
I haven't been in NYC for years but I know there was First Womens Bank
I had heard good things about Banco Popular.
I would suggest look in the Yello Pages and then research their reputation
for customer service (or lack of complaints)

4. Banco Popular is NOT small.

Several branches in the latin sections of the City, but internationally, it's huge.

If one travels a lot in spanish-speaking countries, it might be a good idea to have an account there.

5. Thanks for the response
I just looked them up. Solvay operates only in the Syracuse area.
I'm looking for NYC.

6. Try googling "NY banks"
You'll get a very long list, with a map showing locations.

There are a number of banks I've never heard of, which are presumably small.

So if you know where you'll be living, that could help.

7. I had a car loan
through Canandaigua National Bank in 2000. If I was back in Rochester - that's where my accounts would be. :-) Oh and I know the 'leadership' team there - good eggs all around.
