The list the media keeps harping on is a pretty dismal assortment. Part of the problem is the NYS party is such a disaster... Hevesi, Spitzer, etc. With Clinton taking her celebrity on the road, it's pretty obvious that there's not a lot there.

Perrenial candidate A. Cuomo seems like the most likely choice.... assuming that perrennial candidate M. Bloomberg chooses not to intervene and make someone an offer they can't refuse. Oddly he doesn't seem interested in this particular job.

From the slim pickins: I'd like to see John Hall, upstate progressive Congressman. But that seems unlikely. I'd prefer that Paterson name himself ( it's legal, apparently) to the other names being bandied about.

But that's just me.

not knowing Albany especially well.

This will be a very Albany focused decision based overwhelmingly on the current financial crisis and the Governor being a phoenix attempting to rise from the ashes of bipartisan political misery. Cuomo certainly can be replaced and has gained some national reputation in his job performance. What will Albany gain though? That is why it is more than a name of stature or personal qualifications. If there is something to be gained in Albany AND in Washington by the selection it will be a long complex decision, the longer the better to vet the effect in both places, most predominantly the Albany legislature.

Somebody very keen on the workings of that august body might best illuminate us. Even so, Patterson will play this card very carefully.
