Falls police say woman put up racist sign
Source: The Buffalo News

Two days after a man was sentenced to probation and community service for putting up a sign as a “joke” in a public works garage that said “whites only” on a drinking fountain, city police were called to a home in the 600 block of 25th Street on Sunday to investigate another racially charged sign.

No charges were filed Sunday, but police told the woman she must take down the handwritten sign on a fence on her property saying, “I rent three bedrooms white people Niagara Falls.”

The 53-year-old woman told police she put up the sign after someone tried to break into her house and added, “I can do what I want. I live in America,” according to a police report.

4. This doesn't even look like
she meant it as a joke...Someone tried to break into her house - obviously black - whites don't do those kinds of things, do we?

Racists are racists - through and through, right down to their evil souls.

3. Why doesn't she just hang a Confederate sign in her window?
It conveys the same message but isn't blatant enough to get her in trouble.

9. it depends on how you parse it
"I rent rooms, white people" = rents both rooms and white people (hmmm, what does the 13th amendment say about this) or look, white people, I rent rooms.

"I rent rooms - white, people" = I've got some rooms, but they're basic landlord white in color, guys, so don't go asking for anything fancy.

Legally, if she is renting rooms in a house in which she resides she may be able to discriminate on any basis she wants. There's a clause in the Fair Housing Act about owner-occupied property. Putting up a sign like this, though, just tells everybody else a racist jerk lives there.

12. Since she's in Niagra Falls and she wrote Niagra Falls...
Maybe she really means she has rooms in the falls themselves, and that generally turns renters faces white.

Does the Maid in the Mist have private quarters?

Probably, you're right. She needs a sign saying White racist rents three bedrooms. But, then why does a white racist need all three bedrooms anyway.

Oh, let me outta here!

10. Police were called to a home because someone hung a sign?
Since when is a person hanging a sign on their property something to call the police over? I agree that the woman is a racist asshole, but last I checked, being an asshole was still legal.

What they should have done is call HUD. It sounds like she's into some hefty housing discrimination and should be fined for it.

15. Buffalo sign ordinances would allow her to advertise a rental, but under well-established
civil rights statutes, she cannot legally rent only to "whites"

So I'd guess the police saw her advertising a discriminatory rental, contrary to law, and concluded the sign wasn't for a legal rental and hence violated the sign ordinance
