My mom called me and said "There's an accident on your block, a car turned over" so, being time to take out the garbage, I went to look. Crime tape and cops everywhere, especially in front of my building because that's where the street was bloody.
My new neighbors saw it, said an old man jaywalking (which we all do) was hit, head trauma, that's his blood over there, and his bag, and his shoe, and his glasses... They took him to the hospital. About 30 feet away from the blood was the vehicle. I don't know cars. They wouldn't let us move around when I started to walk down the block to look. We're all kind of penned in for now, but the guys standing by the nearby tavern told me it's a Range Rover with a dual exhaust but no undercarriage. He said that's about $30,000, someone else said, No, more like $65,000, and a third person added "on up".
The driver was pointed out to me. I thought he was plain clothes because he seemed uninjured and sober from my stoop vantage point, a young, mid to late 20s guy with sandy I thought curly hair and and a white shirt with a check pattern. As I was watching, the uniformed cop he was talking with put a friendly arm around him and they walked away. I thought maybe he was comforting him, but the driver didn't seem visibly upset, either. Shock?
I noticed many of the cops at the scene had gold shields. Is that standard for a traffic accident? All that brass?
There's usually too much traffic on this street for anyone to speed.
