Veto of 1812 panel said to hurt NY tourism sites
8/28/2009, 11:39 a.m. EDT
The Associated Press

(AP) — ALBANY, N.Y. - Supporters of a state commission to organize War of 1812 bicentennial events say Gov. David Paterson's rejection of the panel will hamper efforts to draw tourists to upstate New York sites where the conflict was fought.

Robert Emerson, a member of the state commission created to promote French and Indian War commemorations, says Paterson's veto is a "huge embarrassment" for New York. Emerson, executive director at Old Fort Niagara, says the Canadian government plans to spend millions on War of 1812 events.

Paterson said Thursday the state can't afford the commission's $2.25 million cost.

But supporters of the measure say there's no cost to taxpayers. They say a commission would help historic sites draw additional visitors to War of 1812 events.

3. The cost to taxpayers would be nothing but a celebration
would draw money into NY... it sounds like it's a win win situation to me. It seems so odd that he missed that tidbit. Did someone on his staff mess up and not explain to him that this wouldn't actually cost us anything?
