New Yorker's - please help to ban horse drawn carriages!
Are we waiting for someone to be killed?

A few hours ago, a taxi lost control and crashed into a horse-drawn carriage on 60th and 5th. The carriage driver was thrown out of the carriage onto the street. He and the taxi driver were taken to the hospital.

I created this video with footage from the scene.

BREAKING NEWS-NYC CARRIAGE HORSE ACCIDENT
taxi plows into carriage; horse is ???; both drivers hospitalized

Today at midday, a taxi driving south on Fifth Avenue turned into Grand Army Plaza and crashed into a horse-carriage, knocking it over and smashing it, causing the horse to bolt. The taxi continued on, crashing into the stone wall separating Central Park from the sidewalk. The carriage driver appeared to be severely injured and was taken by stretcher to the hospital while in a head brace. The taxi driver was also hospitalized. We were told the horse was OK, but that remains to be verified with the ASPCA veterinarian.
The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages has been calling on the mayor and city officials to ban the unsafe and inhumane horse-drawn carriages but have been met with a lot of resistance. The carriages are flimsy and seat belts are not required. They should not be allowed to mix with congested traffic in NYC. It appears that there were no passengers at the time.

I will be providing updates on what we intend to do through my e-mail list. Please contact me at coalition@banhdc.org if you would like to be added. Provide your full name, borough and e-mail address.

1. Demonstration
PLEASE FORWARD

Please join the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, Friends of Animals, Heart for Animals and NYC activists tomorrow for a demonstration/press conference against the horse-drawn carriage industry as we once again ask Mayor Bloomberg to ban the unsafe and inhumane horse-drawn carriage industry.

This comes on the heels of the most recent accident that occurred September 19th at midday at 60th St and Fifth Avenue. A taxi plowed into a carriage, smashing it. The taxi driver and horse carriage driver were hospitalized. The horse bolted but supposedly is OK. See this video by Donny Moss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_l_9MD29vs

Council Member Tony Avella will join us as he speaks about the critical necessity to pass Intro 658 -the historic bill to ban the inhumane and unsafe horse-drawn carriages.

WHERE: 59th St and Fifth Avenue - north/west corner - Manhattan
WHEN: Monday, September 21st
TIME: 6 PM to 8 PM

2. Hope it went well! The horse carriages suck! I was at work from 6:40 am to 8:00 pm as usual...
