I'm writing Sen. Schumer to thank him for his proposed amendment, defeated Sep 29th in the Finance Committee, which would have added a public option to the healthcare bill.
I hope we all drop Chuck a line asking him to try again when the bill reaches the floor.
For those who haven't read it before, the Dem Senators in the committee who voted against any public option whatsoever (first Rockefeller's, then the compromise Schumer proposal) were Sens. Baucus, Conrad (ND), and Lincoln (AR).
The new president of the AFL-CIO, Trumka, has threatened to withold support from members of Congress who oppose a public option. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. Will they support primary challengers, run 3rd party candidates, or cave?
