If you call the office of St. Lawrence County Clerk Patty Ritchie asking what you can do about the mandate to replace your perfectly good vehicle license plates, a friendly deputy will let you know you can log onto the Web site http://www.nonewplates.com to fill out a petition form.

The site includes a message from Ritchie, a Republican who has run unsuccessfully for the Assembly. It notes that Sen. Darrel Aubertine and Assemblywoman Addie Russell, both Democrats, "are the only Northern NY Legislators who voted for this needless mandate." Ritchie was unavailable. Aubertine spokesman Drew Mangione said, "I didn't know they were using taxpayer-funded workers to direct you to this partisan position." He said the issue is legitimate, however."
