anywhere from the Cumberland Co. area to the Asheville area and up to Raleigh? Thanks very much.

1. Hmm. Can't say that I've thought about it

that way.

If you're looking for more ethical and honest business practices, Costco will hook you up with dealers if you are a member (Costco prenegotiates for you). Carmax might be an option, if you're looking for a good used car. edit: I wrote this to say that the dealers are sometimes not near you. I experimented with buying a car through costco and the dealership they steered me to was in Winston-Salem; I'm in Durham. :P So, you never know.

I found the car I drive now (02 Honda CRV) on Craigslist two years ago. Bought it from a family who hadn't used it much. I've been very happy with it.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

2. I had a decent experience with Carmax in 2004 when I last traded my '95 car for a 2001.
I had done all the research on value of my trade-in and pricing for the car I wanted and came away
satisfied.

I had planned to just buy from them and sell my old car myself--which I've done successfully several
times--but they gave me such a good deal (plus in NC if you trade at time you buy they will subtract
value of trade-in from purchase for figuring state sales tax) that I figured it wasn't worth the hassle
of selling myself.

3. Don't know their politics but
we've had good experiences with Carmax as well. I've bought two cars and my husband has bought one (he's had his for about 10 years now!). I just love the no BS policy and the deal they give you is often about as good as you are going to find unless you really know how to play hardball.

4. I'll echo what others said:
I just this week bought a car at the Carmax place in Winston-Salem. Great experience..no pressure, and one salesperson to deal with!

5. Shirley Automotive
Try Shirley Automotive up in Burlington. I don't know if the father is a Democrat, but his son sure is. I can't remember his first name now, but we used to hang out a few years back. He and his even more liberal wife live in Durham where they prefer the culture over where his dealership is located.

8. check out Boone Ford Mercury....
minority owned too.... I've never asked his actual political leanings, but his actions don't point toward repub-type thinking.
