The bullying bill is dead
Ironically, supporters said they had enough votes to pass it, but only if everyone showed up. The Senate allows members who cannot be around for votes to "pair" with senators who are going to vote the opposite way. When senators "pair," their votes cancel each other.

Berger said the bill's opponents pressured senators who were going to vote no not to accept pair requests from senators who would have voted for the bill.

This makes me so angry on so many levels. The public supports us, we have the votes, but the supposed Christians lobby to use every possible means to keep us from passing the bill. And Jesus wept.

2. session is done today
The galling thing is that we have the votes in the senate and the public agrees with us but a bunch of narrow minded bigots get to hold it up.

3. They're correct, "gay-rights groups would use it to leverage other rights"...
... but they're not right. Until the Federal government defines and includes "sexual orientation" in its anti-discrimination laws, there will be significant pockets of resistance throughout the country, especially in the South.

4. while I will cop to wanting to see it go further
there is a principled position to support a bill protecting children from bullying and not supporting a general gay civil rights bill. Children are required to go to school and generally have no choice which school what adults do get to choose where to work and live.

5. You're absolutely correct: there is a principled position.
All these groups have is a position; for some, hatred of gays exceeds love of children. To me, that's not what Jesus would do.
