We have to get (middle-income and poorer white) people out of the habit of voting Dem at the local level, then voting GOP for Pres. That has been happening since LBJ got the Civil Rights Act passed. :-(

That's why John Edwards was so important. He was the only one really addressing economic populism. That strategy works in the South. It did for decades. In the 1930s, many mill workers proudly proclaimed themselves union and at least part Socialist. My sharecropping grandparents didn't think there was anything unusual about subscribing to Progressive Farmer. This is almost a forgotten chapter in recent Southern history. It can work again, but the Dems do need to get back to that message. That's why freeing the Dem party from the DLC chokehold is so important.

He definitely needs to get over his shame and get back out there in some capacity.
