Shelby native Hagan leads Dole in Senate race (Shelby Star)

David Allen

If recent reports are any indication, there might be a new face representing North Carolina in the U.S. Senate come Election Day.

Democratic candidate Kay Hagan, a Shelby native, leads incumbent Republican candidate Elizabeth Dole by 6 percentage points, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports. The survey of 700 likely voters has a margin of error of ± 4 percent.

"I think from what I've been seeing and garnered, that Kay Hagan is a nice, lifelong Presbyterian who is going to beat that carpetbagger Elizabeth Dole," said Dean Westmoreland, former chair of the Cleveland County Democratic Party. "I have never in my 45 years in politics seen an ad to beat what that woman has done."

Dole, Westmoreland said, will "live in the annals of North Carolina history of gutter-type politics."
Dole's campaign recently released a controversial ad that questions Hagan's ties to an atheist political group. Hagan is suing Dole, accusing the incumbent of defamation and libel ...

1. Hagen Sues Libby!!!
RALEIGH, N.C. — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan on Thursday sued Sen. Elizabeth Dole after the Republican refused to stop airing an ad questioning Hagan's faith.

Hagan also rolled out her own television ad Thursday in which she tells voters "I believe in God" and cites the Bible's Ninth Commandment to decry her rival's tactics.

"Elizabeth Dole's attacks on my Christian faith are offensive," Hagan says in her ad. "She even faked my voice in her TV ad to make you think I don't believe in God. Well, I believe in God. I taught Sunday School. My faith guides my life, and Sen. Dole knows it."

Hagan's campaign had demanded that Dole stop airing her ad, and they followed through on their threat of legal action, filing paperwork in Wake County Superior Court as a prelude to a libel and defamation suit.

Dole's campaign called the suit "frivolous" and said they would try to get it dismissed.
