If recent reports are any indication, there might be a new face representing North Carolina in the U.S. Senate come Election Day.
Democratic candidate Kay Hagan, a Shelby native, leads incumbent Republican candidate Elizabeth Dole by 6 percentage points, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports. The survey of 700 likely voters has a margin of error of ± 4 percent.
"I think from what I've been seeing and garnered, that Kay Hagan is a nice, lifelong Presbyterian who is going to beat that carpetbagger Elizabeth Dole," said Dean Westmoreland, former chair of the Cleveland County Democratic Party. "I have never in my 45 years in politics seen an ad to beat what that woman has done."
Dole, Westmoreland said, will "live in the annals of North Carolina history of gutter-type politics."
