I didn't think I would ever find myself in a position where I enjoyed the results of a Civitas poll. In their post election poll they asked voters why they voted for their choice for governor. They chose to give the results in the respondents' own words. The results are very interesting.
More people had not heard of or did not know enough about McCrory (34) than Perdue (16). More people liked Bev (20) than Pat (16). As a matter of fact, one respondent gave his/her reason for not voting for McCrory as, "I know him personally." Ouch. The same number (20) said they did not like Bev or Pat.
Folks were about evenly split on which candidate represented change - Perdue (14) and McCrory (12).
One stunning difference was when respondents mentioned the candidate's performance in the previous job. Only four respondents didn't think Bev had done a good job and around 19 though McCrory had done a poor job in Charlotte.
I think what jumped out at me most was that the Perdue voters who responded gave much more specific reasons for having voted for Bev or having not voted for McCrory.
The specifics given for not having voted for Bev were taxes (2), education (1) and abortion (3).
The specifics given for not having voted for Pat were education (2), school vouchers (1), too close to Bush (2), failure to reduce crime in Charlotte (2), failure to handle gas issue/shortage (1), offshore drilling (1), for rich people (3), anti-environmentalist (1) and his stand on the garbage/mega dumps (2).
There are an awful lot of people who vote based on whether they "like" a candidate and that showed in the results Civitas has printed. It has to say something, though, that so many people who voted for Bev could give very specific reasons for having done so.
*****Please note, my numbers are of the "ish" variety. The lists are long and the answers are given in exact wording, so had to keep hand tallies and I was a bit cross-eyed by the time I was finished.
