Perdue's husband is excited about his groundbreaking role as the governor's spouse.

No, he won't be called “First Dude.”

Bob Eaves, husband of Gov.-elect Bev Perdue, is honored and excited about his new role as the governor's spouse. He will not, however, assume the title chosen by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's husband, Todd.

Perdue lightheartedly suggested a contest on the Internet to determine the title.

Eaves, 72, will be North Carolina's first first gentleman.

“That might be a little stretch,” he said of the term, chuckling.

1. How about First Spouse?

That's a nice gender-neutral title. It could apply to the husband of a female govenor or president, the wife of a male governor or president or, once we become more enlightened about gay marriage, the male husband of a male governor or president or the female wife of a female governor or president.
