Elaine Marshall
i am woefully uninformed and about to contribute to her campaign, and what i wonder is, are you supporting her? is there any reason i shouldn't? this is the email i received from her campaign this morning:

barbara -

Yesterday, Richard Burr took his arrogance and disloyalty to a new level by actually bragging to reporters about shutting down the Armed Services Committee on behalf of his Republican colleagues. His actions were irresponsible and unbecoming of a U.S. Senator.

But you know what? He doesn't get it.

I do -- and that's why we have to elect a new Senator in November.

Richard Burr has spent so much time in Washington that he is disconnected from ordinary North Carolinians. Rather than focus on partisan politics, you want Washington to focus on jobs and financial reform. Rather than obstruct, you want Burr to get to work.

It's time for a change - Burr's time is over and I'm ready to deliver the pink slip, but I can't do it without you. Tonight marks the last meaningful fundraising deadline before the primary -- can you help keep this campaign strong so we can take the fight to Richard Burr?

Contribute $5 or more by midnight tonight and send a powerful message to Richard Burr that his time is up!

Let's finish this primary, and set our sights on pulling the upset of a lifetime.

Thank you,

Elaine Marshall

P.S. Tonight's deadline is a crucial step on the road to victory - and we need to finish strong. Chip in $5 or more to retire Richard Burr and his failed leadership!

i'm sold on beating burr - but is marshall the right opponent?

i'm at work and just don't have the time to do proper research, so i'm hoping my NC DUer's will lend me their two cents so i can make a semi-informed decision here. thank you!

1. My two cents
Hey barbtries, hope you're doing well and that you get to enjoy some of the nice weather we're having today.

I think Elaine Marshall is a great person, and a fine candidate. And if you want to donate to her, I wouldn't tell you otherwise.

In the primary though, I'm supporting, who I feel, is an even better candidate. And that's Cal Cunningham.

Cal would be the first Iraq War Veteran in the Senate. He was awarded the Bronze Star for cracking down on contractor abuses as a JAG officer. He's young, vibrant, full of energy, his campaign started out of a Facebook group, and now he's been endorsed by Gen. Wesley Clark, the Teamsters, and the NCAE.

I'm volunteering for Cal, and I encourage you to check out his website www.calfornc.com

Good luck with your choice. Have a great day!! :hi:

3. Elaine has somewhat more progressive positions on issues than Cal
At the moment I have not made my final decision, but Elaine is my likely choice in the primaries. I would readily vote for either Cal or Ken in the GE against Burr. I have been watching the various online and print reporting on the candidates. Places like BlueNC.com, indyweek.com, newsobserver.com.

BTW a few of Cal's supporters on other sights have become so annoying to everyone that I am beginning to wonder if they might be disruptors. Here is an example from BlueNC.com:

http://www.bluenc.com/elaine-no-show-naacps-televised-forum-wral

The OP (Anthony Hall) is trying to make an issue of Elaine not attending a televised NAACP candidate forum and not having her priorities in order. Turns out the forum had to be rescheduled because of snow on the original date. The new date for the forum was her mother's 90th birthday and there were already plans in MD (Elaine had lost both her husband and her father in the prior year.)

Near the bottom of the linked thread is a response showing some of the differences between the candidates. Elaine opposes the troop escalation in Afghanistan (the others fully support Obama's plan) -- one of the few policy differences I have noticed between her and Ken Lewis. In almost all cases, Cal makes slight qualification towards a more "centrist" position versus Elaine and Ken. (e.g. Increase minimum wage instead of living wage.)

Elaine is only candidate to have been elected to state-wide office and has been reelected repeatedly since. She was the first women elected to office statewide in NC, defeating NASCAR driver Richard Petty. (The late Chief Justice Susie Sharp had earlier been elected statewide as a judge.)

As far as I know, none of these candidates hsve any hint of scandal. I think that most voters in NC giver Elaine high marks for integrity, even those voting for someone else.

I have yet to meet Cal, but expect to before the primary. (Have also met Burr.) I am still learning about Cal, doing my due dilignece, checking out his position statements, learning about his life story. Plan to see if my JAG friends have any opinions about him.

P.S. After writing this, I realize I am leaning more towards Elaine than I had realized.

4. Elaine is our current Secretary of State: it's a statewide contest, and she's
won it twice. I'm not ashamed of any of the people running in the D primary, but I think Elaine has more political experience than anybody else. I like her, and she gets my vote
