Locavore Directory?
Edited on Wed Apr-28-10 12:06 PM by supernova
Is there any interest in putting together a little directory here of local places to get fresh produce and such? Or even restaurants that feature local food on the menu?

I mean other than the farmers' markets. We all know about those right?

Since there has been an upswing in interest in our little foodie culture, and a couple of favorable articles in the national press about it, I didn't want to lose all the good info. Or if you've found a treasure, share it here if you want. I just got another name in my email from a place that sells grass-feed beef and pork, for instance.

edit: I meant for all over the state, D/R/Ch H, Asheville, Charlotte, coast too. :-)

1. four restaurants listed in _Southern Living_
Is this the article (plus the one crossposted on Energy Bulletin today) one to which you were referring?

http://www.southernliving.com/travel/south-east/north-carolina-triangle-restaurants-organically-grown-produce-00400000044136/

Lantern: www.lanternrestaurant.com or (919) 969-8846
Fearrington House Restaurant: www.fearrington.com or (919) 542-2121
Zely & Ritz: www.zelyandritz.com or (919) 828-0018
Eno Restaurant & Market: www.enorestaurantandmarket.com (opens in 2009)

If the Indy (Raleigh/Durham) doesn't have a list already for the Triangle, I'm sure they'd welcome one. The local events mags in Wilmington, Triad, Charlotte and Asheville would pick up the idea soon.

And what is that amazing green catering business that's running its trucks off the grease from the Irish restaurant downtown (as well as doing every little detail sustainably)? They're acquiring a national reputation. Just can't remember their name.

Good idea. I love my state!

2. Articles
The Southern Living one is new to me. I found two:

Bon Appetit Magazine: America's Foodiest Small Town http://www.bonappetit.com/magazine/2008/10/americas_foodiest_small_town

New York Times: Durham, a Tobacco Town, Turns to Local Food http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/21/dining/21carolina.html?src=me

Good news about the other press.

You should PM me sometime. I suspect our paths have crossed. :-)

5. Orange County - Fresh Dairy and Organic Meat
Dairy -

Maple View Farm - Although they sell to supermarkets in the Triangle, you can also visit the Farm Store for an outing with the kids. Fresh milk, butter, cream, and ice cream. Oh and their chocolate milk is to die for! So is the ice cream. ;-)

Store: http://www.mapleviewfarm.com/pages/countrystore.html
**********************************************************************
Meat and Wheat -

Just learned about this today from my sister in an email:

Hogan's Magnolia View Farm: Grass fed beef,

http://www.hogansbeef.com/

For those who want to know, Hogan's is where Ramses, the UNC ram lives. :D

Mr Hogan also sells pasture-raised pork and chicken from carls-beth farm http://www.waltersunlimited.com/index.php

Someone killed and butchered Ramses.

BTW Ramses is an endangered breed.
