Former commissioner defeats incumbent in NC House District 115 race

ASHEVILLE — Former Buncombe County Commissioner Patsy Keever pulled off a rarity in North Carolina politics Tuesday, defeating a powerful incumbent in a party primary.
Keever won 60 percent of votes cast, turning an edge in early voting into an easy victory over four-term state Rep. Bruce Goforth for the Democratic nomination in N.C. House District 115.
Keever got 3,664 votes, while Goforth had 2,462 votes in a district representing about a third of Buncombe County.
“I'm very excited that the people have won,” said Keever, who noted the environment as a signature issue that may have put her over the top. “This is not about me, it's about us.”
The race also stood out as one of few offering an outcome not easily predicted in a primary with a predictably lackluster turnout.

On the heels of the Sierra Club and PARC endorsements comes this news from WNC For Change:
WNC for Change has officially endorsed Patsy Keever for the Democratic nomination in the NC House District 115 race. Ms. Keever, former three-term Buncombe County Commissioner, is challenging incumbent Bruce Goforth in the Democratic primary.
An online poll of the WNC for Change membership indicated that 90 percent of respondents supported endorsing Patsy Keever over Bruce Goforth in the District 115 race. Some responses from members who participated in the poll include:
Keever’s values and positions are most aligned with those of WNC for Change.
She is a progressive, environmentalist, social liberal, voted for Obama.
Patsy sees a broader vision of equality for all, and she advocates for strong environmental controls, better education for our children and the right ideas to revitalize our economy.
I especially like that she was a teacher, mom and grandmother. . . . I wholeheartedly think we need more women in government.
Patsy doesn’t take the big money in running her campaigns, and her progressive positions on education, environment, green jobs, etc. are more in line with the change we all worked for in 2008.
I feel she would make a truly honest and independent minded member of the NC House.
WNC for Change is a grassroots organization formed to answer President Barack Obama’s call for a new spirit of patriotism through support of his national legislative agenda, involvement in local politics and commitment to community service.
