5-year-old dies from pit bull attack; grandmother injured

WAXHAW, N.C. -- Waxhaw police say charges are pending against the owner of two pit bulls that attacked a 5-year-old girl and grandmother, killing the girl.

The attack happened at about 11 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Rehobeth Avenue behind the Captain's Galley restaurant.

Waxhaw police say two dogs attacked 5-year-old Makayla Woodard and 67-year-old Nancy Presson in their front yard. The dogs were captured and euthanized.

Police said the dogs belonged to someone in the neighborhood and wandered into the victims' yard. It was not immediately known how the dogs got loose, but police said charges were pending against the dogs' owner.

1. What a horrifying, painful way to die.
Tragedy.

2. It's been long
enough now to face the fact that this breed needs to be illegal. Don't tell me it's the owner. These animals are dangerous out of the womb. Just the unpredictability of the breed is enough. How many Collies have you heard about in the last decade killing children? No one needs an animal like that, no more than they need a gun.

3. Welcome to DU.
You can fight this one; I've been in the ring many times before on this issue. Good luck!

4. Agreed.
I have had two dogs attacked by two different pit bulls within a block of my house (my dogs were on a leash, the pit bulls were not) Both pit bulls were "gentle family dogs" who had "never hurt a fly", but nonetheless left their property (in one case, jumped a fence), ignored their owner's commands, and attacked dogs that were half their size and not provoking them in any way.
