Dispatcher Fired for Shacking Up

BURGAW, NC-September 20, 2005 - Living in sin has a North Carolina sheriff bent out of shape.

The Pender County sheriff ordered dispatcher Debora Hobbs to move out of the house she shared with her boyfriend, get married or find a new job.

Hobbs quit and is now suing. A hearing in the case was scheduled for yesterday but has been postponed.

Sheriff Carson Smith argues that just living together is a violation of a 200-year-old state law. While the law is still on the books, it's rarely enforced.
