1. Hey, what's Charlotte like? More progressive than some of the deep south?

Infrastructure, schools, general feel?

I live in the FL panhandle, and we're contemplating an eventual move (to get away from hurricanes; we've had enough). NC (Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham) are among the places we're thinking about. I know you get hurricanes in NC, but we're right ON the coast, and nowhere in our metro area is safe from the absolute worst winds. Mid-state NC seems inland enough to not get the brunt of bad storms.

But if we're gonna move, we want to move someplace that's more progressive and a step up infrastructure, etc. I know... FL panhandle... it wouldn't take much. But I'd hate to move somewhere else in the South only to find out their rednecks are as common and as bad as ours, only w/ different accents.

Also, getting a bit specific, but how are schools set up for Asperger's/Autism kids (I realize you may not know).

3. Also

a very beautiful city, lot of urban sprawl,weather a little milder than FL. Schools have issues. My kids are in private. Big Big banking town with Wachovia and Bank of America. Raleigh-Durham I think would be a little more progressive with Duke and Chapel hill there.

4. We live in Charlotte and my wife is an elementary

school teacher in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. There are some real terrific schools - Hers is a traditional magnet school with 62% of the population African American and they are around the third highest in the county in end of grade test scores. My wife just chimed in as I am writing this (she had a pretty bad day at work) and said all Charlotte Mecklenburg cares about is teaching to the test. I'm sure there is a lot of this throughout the country with shrubs no child left behind edict. Anyway, other than Charlotte check out the Chapel Hill and Asheville areas. I know they are very progressive areas.

2. Charlotte itself

and the county she is in(Mecklenburg)went for Kerry. However,we also have Sue Myrick-r and Mel Watt-D. Its about 50/50 here.
