Guilford Co. election official calls activists "Luddites" and "spammers"
http://greensboro.rhinotimes.com/story.html?id=1107

Jim Pfaff, a member of the Guilford County Board of Elections, said that, overwhelmingly, election officials across the state are against the changes, which require a massive overhaul of voting machinery.

Pfaff also said the main reason state legislators adopted the new law was because of a widespread “spam” email campaign instigated by an advocacy group consisting of only about 25 people. He said the election experts and election officials, for the most part, did not see the legislation as a good idea.

Pfaff said that, even with the paper verification, it would be impossible to be certain that the vote displayed on the printout is the same as the one that registers electronically.

A representative of Diebold, a company displaying its machines, said the voting machines had internal logic checks and other safety measures to assure consistency in that respect.

Pfaff said there was currently a lot of misleading information in the air.

Yeah, but we aren\t the folks doing the "misleading".

The gall of this jackass to dismiss computer professionals as "Luddites" and to accuse us "spamming".

These arrogant tools have got to go.

I encourage readers in NC to contact this person and politely, but firmly express your displeasure at his insulting comments.

1. "...even with the paper verification, it would be impossible to be certain
that the vote displayed on the printout is the same as the one that registers electronically."

IOW, he knows that there are ways for a program to circumvent the "paper trail" provided by an internal spool, or individual receipts for electronic votes.

That is why we need hand counted paper ballots - the single safest voting system ever devised. No matter what the tabulator says, the final determination is what the ballots in hand say.

4. This is why we
put "paper beats computer" in the law. If there is a discrepancy between the digital count, the paper count is the ballot of record.

2. OK. Is this guy elected or appointed?
If he is elected, when is he up for re-election?

If he is appointed, then who is the person responsible?

Certainly I agree, paper ballots are the best... I like the idea of scanned ballot sheets (because they're verifiable). The Indian idea of elections is good too (simple electronic counter). Certainly the paper spool is a cop-out and shouldn't be accepted. And guess why the calls for paper print outs? It is because we aren't sure that what we punch into a machine is registered accurately even with a paper printout. If this paper ballot can be spotted after being entered into the machine then we can be certain that our choices are registered correctly because the paper ballot would be the #1 source for a record of what we indicate. The electronic record, if tampered with afterwards, could be challenged and then... we're into a paper count.

Mark.

3. shew, Guilford almost got Diebolded and other things
Yikes.

These folks must be ignorant.

To love computerized voting so much, does he have internet access, to read all
of the disasters attributed to Diebold?

And the group of 25 spammers he refers to, sorry, but our group is up to
181 members as of today.

But our members activate other groups and list serves like NC's Code Pink
and other groups. Probably thousands of folks.

Well, maybe we only had 25 folks in Guilford emailing him, well we need to increase that
number then.

Please send polite emails to Jim Pfaff, a member of the Guilford County Board of Elections at
JSPfaffLaw@aol.com

Tell him you aren't a Luddite, and Diebold is a lemon.

Agh!

7. the Dems in Guiford, or George Nixon Gilbert
The election director, a democrat, has the middle name: Nixon.

The Dem BOE members are just as narrow minded as can be, think
paperless voting is the best thing, blah blah blah.
