RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sen. Elizabeth Dole's concerns over a proposal to turn over the management of six U.S. ports to a Middle Eastern company hasn't stopped her husband, former Sen. Bob Dole, from lobbying for the $6.8 billion deal.
"I am deeply concerned that the proposed transfer of seaport operations to a company controlled by the United Arab Emirates government might compromise our ability to effectively control our ports and harbors," Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a letter to committee chairman Sen. John Warner, R-Va.
Bob Dole, a former Kansas senator and GOP presidential candidate, is among a team of lawyers at the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Alston & Bird hired to represent Dubai Ports World, which is owned by United Arab Emirates.
"Sen. Elizabeth Dole's decisions are made independent of Bob Dole," said spokeswoman Lindsay Taylor Mabry. Mabry said she didn't know how long Elizabeth Dole had known of her husband's role in the deal.
