Well, I am learning about this guy Vernon in a way that I thought I wouldn't. I think this guy has run for Congress before. Now he's going on the all-out attack against Brad Miller.
My wife got addressed to her a packet of information about Brads voting record. It makes for very interesting reading, and in this way Vernon paints himself in extremely interesting colours.
What Vernon has done in his circular is to dismiss the following:
a) The London School of Economics. This is a highly respected world renowned university that a lot of top businesspeople have attended. b) Everyone else who helped draw up the electoral map of North Carolina. Vernon makes it seem that Brad drew up the 13th District by himself. c) Bill Clinton. For the "usual". d) Homosexuality. He comes across as vehemently anti-gay people in this information. When the military are complaining about not getting enough people, Brad votes with legislation to allow openly homosexuals to enroll and stay in the armed forces. Vernon doesn't appear to be liking this idea. Are the men on the front lines going to be driven to distraction and taking to shagging each other instead of attending to their duty? I think not. e) Anti-immigrants. As an immigrant myself, Vernon leaves out important facts when he quotes certain parts of Brad's voting record. Unlawful aliens do work, do pay taxes (probably too much), and want to make a contribution. Vernon paints these unlawful aliens as a drain on society. There needs to be reform but the bills that Brad voted against were too draconian, and the ones he voted for were voted down by the Republicans anyway. f) The ACLU. He paints the ACLU as an organisation that defends child molesters. g) The constitution. Vernon makes it clear that he wants to put the "Christian" faith (the one that is in this country in the form of Pat Robertson, Dr James Dobson, etc, not the Christianity that I know and practice) heart and centre of the way things are run in America. As far as I am aware these kinds of actions he is advocating are against the First Amendment. h) The futileness of the Iraq War. Vernon said Brad's against our troops - which is rubbish. He wants them home, out of harms way.
I'm sure I could think of more things that Vernon is against. But he appears to me a strange individual. He comes from a family which espoused Democratic Party values and he himself admits that he identified himself as being a Democrat in the past. He says that he would vote to ensure Congress doesn't cut Veterans spending, whereas his elected party members vote to do just that. He says that he is mainstream and allied to the Civil Rights movement and namedrops Dr. Rev. King. But his actions themselves are segregationist.
I've never met this guy, and I'm sure he's a decent enough man. But he paints himself as so homophobic, so anti-immigrant, so hypocritical that if I could vote, I certainly wouldn't be voting for him.
