Lot of conservatives don't like Rep Charles Taylor (R)
because he has alot of corruption floating around him.

31. I have to disagree. It depends on where you live in NC.

In some areas of NC, it's nothing but fundy freeperville. In some areas you can meet halfway decent people. It all depends on where you end up.

You shouldn't say the person is bitter because of their circumstances. YOUR comment sounds bitter to me. "There but for the grace of God, go I" is a saying with some truth to it.

33. Asheville is a larger city here in NC.

In NC, when you leave any major city, you end up with that the poster was talking about. Trust me. I've lived here all my life. I know how this place is. The bigger cities are nice and there are some good people to be found. Leave the general area of any of the larger cities and all you get are more and more Bush supporters. And you know what type of personalities come with that kind of brain damage.

And it is no different in New York, or anywhere else, for that matter. Go to upstate New York and you will find some of the reddest necks, even on Long Island there are lots and lots of them.

I've lived in SC, TN, VA, WV, KY, PA, IN and NC--there were assholes and great people in all of them. In NC Asheville and little Boone (which I adore) are two of the most progressive places in the state. I now live in Durham, close to THE most progressive Chapel Hill, and it's not bad either.

If you stay near the bigger cities, you can meet good people, but if you can't afford to live anywhere you want, you are just stuck with jerks. I can relate to how that person feels. I'm in the same situation working hard as I can to get enough of an education to be able to possibly move out.

:patriot: I moved to NC last summer from Florida, and I watch C-span and CNN mostly every day for a couple hours.(retiree) I've often wondered about the opinions of our legislators(Dole, Burr, Foxx) in Congress, but I have never seen them debate any bills, but they usually follow the party line on votes. Amazing how these people get a free ride while sticking it to the people they supposedly represent. Yes, this country needs to change.

I'm in Mt Airy, Surry County, and as you said, there doesn't seem to be too many Dem supporters on the nat'l level. But being a retiree, I just enjoy the environment and having been in the path of hurricanes with 140 mph winds, I can live with this! But in the meantime, I had myself registered, and will vote for the 'new direction', as outlined by Nancy Pelosi.

I have a cousin in that area who heads up a "spay and neuter your pet" organization. She started it from the ground up. That area is becoming much more enlightened on animal welfare issues. Don't know if that interests you, just thought I'd let you know. :)

I don't live there but love to visit. It is beautiful and charming. There are 2 great places to eat downtown. One is the Noodle Shop and the other is a vegetarian place called The Laughing Seed.
People I interacted with were very friendly. There does seem to be a mix of progressives and conservatives but that is true anywhere. Good luck with your move.

As a native Californian, (LA) I find the slower pace of life and progressive nature of this small city very comfortable.....not the case in some southern areas.

From a fellow New Yorker, I couldn't disagree more with those who dislike Asheville. We moved here not too long ago (keeping a NYC tiny apartment for those frequent trips back). We absolutely love it!

I lived in NYC most of my life and have lived in many different places -- this is, without doubt, one of the best I've found. Asheville is as fun and intellectual as you want to make it -- there are a wide variety of people here and I've found people very accepting.

Yeah, the outlying towns are pretty Republican, but I suspect that will change as more and more of us move here. And among the Republicans I've talked to, most are totally fed up with our current batch of Rethugs. My goal has been to get those people to frigging vote! Many of them don't vote....and would vote for Democrats in the next election. I've succeeded in convincing a couple of them and getting them registered -- we need help making this happen!

Not a Schuler fan here.....but most definitely not a Taylor fan, so getting out the vote is critical. You're going to be busy!
